Majorca’s castle on the hill

Posted by Luci Ackers on 13 March 2015

Majorca is famed as an island of sun, sea, gorgeous sandy beaches and a wonderful hinterland, much beloved of walkers and cyclists.

But this Balearic beauty also boasts much history and culture. Palma, the capital, espouses the best of both.

And well worth seeing is the large 14th-Century Bellver Castle, which dominates the city and Bay of Palma from its hill-top position to the west of the island.

The castle was built for King James II of Majorca and was originally intended as a royal residence. It is one of the few circular castles in Europe. The layout is arranged around a central courtyard and there are three adjoining semi-circular towers. Built with two floors, the inner openings face the circular yard through a gallery of Gothic arches and the upper floor includes a ribbed vault of Gothic architecture.

You can visit the San Marcos Chapel, Throne Room and kitchen and see a collection of classical sculptures. There are, of course, spectacular panoramic views of Palma and the bay to be enjoyed from the ramparts.

By the 18th century Bellver Castle had become a military prison and in the 1930s ownership transferred to Palma’s City Council. Today it houses Palma’s Municipal Museum and also hosts various cultural and leisure activities.
