Austria is a superb destination for skiing, the second most popular country in Europe for British skiers after France. It is famous for its picturesque resorts and outstanding levels of service. It is home to resorts that cater for skiers and snowboarders of all levels, so whether you're just starting out or you're a pro on the slopes, there'll be some excellent opportunities for you.
From Viehhofen you'll be close to Saalbach and Hinterglemm, both pretty villages in the Glemmtal Valley. Located side-by-side, these resort towns together form the Saalbach-Hinterglemm municipality, which is well-known for its ski slopes. At ten minutes away, the area provides quick and easy access to fantastic skiing. There is around 270km of of piste (marked ski slops and runs) that are well equipped for beginners and intermediates alike, and over 70 ski lifts to transport you exactly where you need to go!
You can either drive the short distance along the Glemmerstraße, or there is a free ski bus that you may find useful. It'll drop you off right at the Schönleiten lifts at the base of the Saalbach-Hinterglemm slopes. Take a look at the timetable here.
New to skiing?
Maybe you've never done anything like this before and don't have any of the equipment or previous experience. Fear not! Austria is a fantastic place to learn. Saalbach-Hinterglemm is home to not only a brilliant selection of ski schools, but also a whole range of shops and equipment hire. You can take the learning process at your own pace, but it really would be a shame to pass up the opportunity while you're here!

In the other direction, Zell am See and Kaprun both offer beautiful skiing. Zell am See is very family friendly with low altitude slopes and a picturesque town situated on the banks of the Zeller see. Kaprun is just slightly further south but really good for glacier skiing.The Kitzsteinhorn glacier offers year-round skiing.
Zell am See and Kaprun have something for everyone with slopes ranging from nursery to black runs and off-piste areas. The views here are simply stunning and the towns are traditional with quiet, cosy bars or livelier pubs and restaurants. Zell am See has a traffic-free centre and the cobbled streets of the town centre date back to the 13th century with many medieval buildings.
