Filming locations in Almería

Posted by Luci Ackers on 22 October 2015

Looking to keep the youngsters entertained this Half Term?

Thanks to its southern location and interesting culture, Almería is a hot-spot for film crews looking for that money-making shot. It is home to a number of interesting and recognisable filming locations, why not take the little ones to see some of the sites up close this half term?

The Wild West

The Tabernas Desert is what's known as a 'semi-desert' and one of very few in Europe. It's located in the south-eastern province of Spain and some areas receive below 200mm of rainfall each year! This makes it the driest region of Europe and, with rugged landscapes and scratchy shrubbery dotted across the sandy expanse, it's absolutely ideal for those film crews who don't want to travel excessive distances for a good desert-shot. Some huge mainstream titles owe credit to the Tabernas Desert including Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Doctor Zhivago (1965) and Indiana Jones (1989). Not to mention a fair few of Clint Eastwood's Westerns like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966). More recently Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014) and a couple of science fiction productions – The Reckoning (2004) and a Dr. Who (2012) TV episode 'A Town Called Mercy' both used the dry sandy surroundings of Almería, demonstrating the region's versatility.

The desert film studios have now become a Wild West tourist attraction known as Mini Hollywood which is split into three sections: Western Leone, Fort Bravo and Oasys Park. The first two are still in use part time, for filming. The last, however, is the largest of the three and has been converted into a theme park for visitors. Here you can wander the Western Village and see the authentic-looking buildings lining the square, watch a gun fight show in the centre and then head to the Museo de Cine, the film museum with examples of various projects and accessories from over the years. Little ones will enjoy the shop where they can have a go at dressing up.

A trip to the beach…

The Cabo de Gata Natural Park is a protected section of coastline which has also lent its name to Hollywood. Relatively unspoilt, thanks to its protected status, the natural park is home to sandy bays and hidden caves which overlook the sparkling blue Mediterranean.

Two particularly famous scenes were shot here: the train bombing scene of Lawrence of Arabia, and the seagulls vs aeroplane scene of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, where Sean Connery and Harrison Ford run along the beach. The old iron and gold mines close by around Rodalquilar also featured in the same film – so you can really get exploring!

The Cabo ge Gata is a great one for flora and fauna, with the coastline perfect for a range of marine life and offshore coral reefs. The volcanic formations create a nice protective habitat and the clear water in the sheltered bays makes for the ideal snorkelling conditions.

Centre of town

In the beautiful centre of Almería itself you'll find old churches, tiny back roads leading to public squares, and hidden architectural gems. Visit the imposing Alcazaba which dates from the 10th century and appeared in one of the 'Bond' films, Never Say Never Again (1983). The production made use of the old fortification, along with some of the surrounding landscapes.

In the past year rumours have been confirmed that the upcoming 6th season of the award winning HBO series Game of Thrones will have a number of scenes shot in the town, with particular focus on the Alcazaba. This large defensive stronghold will certainly provide a picturesque setting, with its rugged mountainous backdrop.

Almería is full of incredible scenery which you can take the time to really explore. Find out how to stay in a beautiful Moorish-style rural resort by following the link below.
