Holker Hall, Cumbria

Posted by Luci Ackers on 3 February 2015

Holker Hall and Gardens is situated just a short distance from Morecambe Bay and as well as being the home of Lord and Lady Cavendish, is also a popular visitor attraction. It is set in parkland that merges into the beautiful countryside framed by the Lakeland hills.

The Hall dates from the 16th century with a large amount of alterations taking place in the 1800s. Visitors are able to wander and explore the grand rooms, including the library where many of the books luckily survived the fire of 1871, and the bedroom Queen Mary stayed in when she visited in 1937. The beautiful Main Hall has an interesting assortment of furniture from a range of countries and periods.

The house is only half the attraction, there are also 25 acres of beautiful colourful gardens providing the perfect area for leisurely strolls or admiring the spectacular displays blending smoothly into the outlying parkland. There is the Great Holker Lime, old and huge, not to be missed as well as the labyrinth to challenge little ones. A couple of walks are suggested to best explore the grounds and there is an extensive collection of unusual and even rare plant species.

With a number of events taking place through the year like producers' markets, Holker Hall makes a great day out. It has been closed for the winter months, but opens its doors again to visitors next month and will be getting ready for Easter with events days planned in April. Have a look at their website here.
