Austria's famous mountainous terrain lends itself well to the popular activity of Nordic Walking. This is a form of vigorous walking that uses a whole range of muscles and movements and it is said to be wonderfully beneficial for both body and soul.
Nordic Walking uses more muscles than regular walking (approximately 90% of your skeletal muscles) and is a full-body exercise using poles specifically designed for the job. The poles are similar to those of cross-country skiing, though considerably shorter. They have removable rubber tips allowing them to be used on hard surfaces, and hardened metal tips for use in snow and ice – so this is a great sport for any time of year. Research suggests that it is not only great exercise and good for the circulatory system, but also strengthens the heart, helps with back problems and reduces symptoms of stress. The NHS even reports that regular Nordic Walking can lower the risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes as well as asthma and even some cancers. It provides a great range of exercise, toning the upper and lower body all in one go, it is easy on the joints, meaning it causes no unnecessary strain and is very adaptable, so all ages and abilities can enjoy the sport and tailor it to suit their needs. Plus it's fantastic for admiring the breathtaking scenery of Austria of course!
