The village Castle Bolton, home to the eponymous, medieval Bolton Castle, sits in the middle of the Yorkshire Dales and, amid rolling hills and fantastic views, makes a good family day out.
The castle was built in the 14th century by Richard le Scrope who was the chancellor of England during the reign of Richard II. It has played a significant role in some of the most important political and religious events between the 14th and 17th centuries and is still privately owned today by direct descendants of Richard le Scrope.
The castle gardens have been restored and now include a well-stocked herb garden, a rose garden, a walled vineyard, a bowling green, and a maze. There are also various activities going on throughout the day including falconry displays, seeing the wild boar being fed and watching an archery demonstration. The Castle is host to a range of events throughout the year which you can see here.
There is a lovely tea room which is located in the Guest Hall. Here you will find a selection of homemade and locally produced meals, with afternoon tea being served from 2.30pm. There is a gift shop as well which stocks traditional toys and books and lots of souvenirs too!
