Cartmel is an unspoilt village in Cumbria, located right at the edge of the Lake District National Park and just ten minutes from Merlewood. It sits just north-west of the tourist town Grange-over-Sands which is popular for the stunning views it offers out over Morecambe Bay.
Famous for its Cartmel puddings, the village is widely known as the home of sticky toffee pudding. The Cartmel Village shop started baking the delicious treats more than two decades ago, in the shop's little back kitchen, and how far it has come since then! This year the Cartmel Pudding is celebrating its 25th anniversary and what started out as a small production has grown and grown to see the puddings now being sold in farm shops, delis and bigger food chains such as Waitrose!
Why are the puddings so well loved? Well for starters they are homemade, right down to the hand ladling of the sauce. This is a family-run business where the dedicated team share a strong passion for their product and the proof is in the tasting. The puddings truly are made with love and still follow the same tried and tested recipe that they have followed right from the start. Not only do the puddings contain 100% natural ingredients, but also many of the local suppliers found to source the ingredients all those years ago are still the same ones used today.
When staying at Merlewood you won't want to miss the opportunity to take a wander down to Cartmel to try these excellent puddings for yourself from their birth place.
