Château Beynac, Dordogne

Posted by Luci Ackers on 16 March 2015

Château Beynac is a beautiful medieval castle located high above the Dordogne River, it is heritage listed and offers stunning views across the Dordogne valley. A visit to the château is a must for any history lover, and you must make sure to see the beautiful courtyard and the Romanesque keep. Wander through the stables and into the church during your visit and take the opportunity to explore the dungeons, kitchens and living quarters. Once you have seen as much of the castle as you like, stop to enjoy the breathtaking views over the river which stretch all the way to Castelnaud and Marqueyssac.

The castle is situated on the banks of the River, in the village of Beynac-et-Cazenac which is one of France's 'Les plus beaux villages de France', meaning it is a designated beautiful village. There are 152 of these around, 10 of which are found in the Dordogne. That is more than any other area in France.

The castle itself is heavily fortified and features double crenellated walls and double moats, along with the advantage of being over 200 meters above the river. None of this, however, was enough to stop Richard the Lionheart, who conquered the castle by scaling the cliffs below. His occupation of the castle, though, was short lived. The beautiful building has been destroyed and rebuilt many times since its original construction in the 12th-century. Once belonging to one of the four baronies of ancient Périgord, it has been substantially renovated and is now privately owned but still open for visitors. Take a look at the website for more information and for prices.
