Meet Doug!
Our fantastic gardener, Doug, is this year celebrating his 40th anniversary on site here at Sibton Park. He’s been working the gardens since before Sibton was even in our care, back when it was still a private school, and his tireless work has certainly paid off.
These Kentish gardens are loved by each of the guests and are beautifully presented at all times of the year, but they really come in to their own during the summer.
At this time of year gardens are on our brains, especially with the famous RHS Chelsea Flower Show underway in London during May, and our gardens at home starting to burst into colour; beautifully fragrant and buzzing with the sound of bees.
The grounds of Sibton Park are very inviting and there is a huge variety of plants to spot and areas to discover. Doug is proud of the topiary garden, which still features the same plants that have been growing and sculpted there for more than 40 years. He works pretty much single-handedly though the tall yew tree walk does require an extra pair of hands and special equipment to get up there and prune, simply because it has grown so tall over the years.
Doug’s goal is really to grow as much as possible in the space, so there is always something interesting to see and he takes a great pride in all that he’s created. What he likes best is seeing visitors just relax and soak it all up.
With perennial borders, formal rose gardens and a wild flower area, as well as gentle lawns, Sibton Park really does have a little bit of everything. And thanks to Doug, it all remains ticking over nicely.
