Go alpaca trekking in Kent

Posted by Luci Ackers on 24 May 2017

When you’re staying in the heart of the stunning Kentish countryside, you’ll want to get out there and explore your surroundings. Close to Sibton Park we are lucky enough to have easy access to the Kent Downs AONB, the Heritage Coast between Folkestone and Dover and the High Weald AONB. But how about taking part in a walk with a bit of a difference?

Alpaca trekking

Alpaca Trekking is all the rage at the moment. These characterful animals are becoming more and more popular among people who want to shake up their walks a little bit. The idea is that a group of you (humans and alpacas) will set off on a chosen route, and spend an enjoyable romp through the countryside getting to interact with and get to know the animals along the way. Alpaca Annie at Haguelands Farm offers just this, and only half an hour from Sibton Park.

Why alpacas?

Alpacas are farmed for their wool. They don’t shed their fleece so they’re shorn once a year, like sheep. But, unlike sheep, their fibre does not contain any of the lanolin; it’s warmer and less scratchy than sheep’s wool making it ideal material for jumpers, scarfs or even soft toys for children.

Alpacas also tend to be very clean animals compared to a lot of other pack animals. They are reasonably cheap to keep because they don’t eat a huge amount and their hardy disposition means they don’t require too much shelter. Usually 10 alpacas per acre is pretty standard (depending on the quality of the grass), so if you have a bit of land, they’re a pretty good choice; visitors enjoy wandering farms to watch the animals in their own habitats and they probably enjoy seeing visitors too!

So… why walk?

Well, first of all, they make great companions. Alpacas are docile, friendly, intelligent and affectionate. They’re very social animals, meaning they cooperate nicely when led on a wander through the countryside. Because they are so placid and inquisitive, alpacas are very easy to train and the ones at Haguelands are halter-trained, so there’s no risk of losing anyone! They love seeing new places so they enjoy a walk through the countryside as much as you do.

Visiting Alpaca Annie

At Alpaca Annie you get designated an alpaca each and he/she will be your companion for the duration of the walk. They’re great fun and together you’ll be led on a walking adventure through the famous Romney Marsh in Kent. You’ll trek through lovely countryside and farmland and soak up some wonderful views of the surrounding Kentish countryside. It is certainly a walk with a difference.

When you return back to the farm take a wander round the onsite shop full of beautiful clothing and gifts, and stop in at the little café for a pick-me-up.

The treks are £25 per person. Opening times do depend on the season, so take a look at the website for more info and for the online shop https://alpacaannie.com.

Or give them a call to organise a trek or a meet and greet with the alpacas: 07706173225.
