Musée des Beaux Arts is located in Quimper, a commune towards the west of Brittany. It is about 20 minutes away from the Manoir du Hilguy and makes a great little day trip if the weather is less than perfect.
The museum is located in a building that was constructed in the 19th century and houses a great collection of fine art pieces ranging from Breton inspired paintings to a range of graphics including 12,000 prints bequeathed by the designer De Silguy. The museum displays a collection of works inspired by areas throughout Europe, with the paintings of the 20th century largely influenced by Britain. And the Italian collection has a stunning range of works dating from as early as the 14th century through to the Renaissance period.
The Museum is often asked to lend works to other exhibitors both locally and internationally and the works of Quimper have become well shown in all major museums of fine arts in the region. Quimper keeps things fresh by having a rolling list of visiting exhibitions, averaging roughly three per year. The next one is on show from June to October 2016 and is a self-portrait exhibition from the Orsay Museum in Paris.
