Our Top Five Favourite Cycle Routes in the Yorkshire Dales

Posted by Luci Ackers on 10 March 2015

National Trust Goddards to Treasurer's House

This route starts in the incredibly cycle-friendly city of York. It is just under 6 miles and there is the added bonus of a cup of tea at both ends thanks to the National Trust sites at the start and finish. The route takes you along the riverside and visits some of the amazing historical landmarks of the beautiful city. This is a flat cycle route with only one or two small dips and humps so it's perfect for the whole family.

Upper Wharfedale Explorer

This is a 10 mile route which is circular, starting and finishing in the village of Kettlewell, in the Yorkshire Dales. This cycle trail takes in some of the 2013 'Le Tour Yorkshire' route and is the perfect opportunity to enjoy the beautiful valley and ride a flatter section of the Le Tour. It is not too busy with traffic, and in spring it is amazing to cycle through the wonderful riverside meadows and see them in flower. You pass through a number of small pretty villages such as Starbotton, Buckden and Hubberholme.

East Riddlesden Hall Medium Loop

This is a challenging route for the keen cyclist that takes in some of the amazing Yorkshire scenery on a 53 mile trail, starting from East Riddlesden Hall. You begin by going along the valley on the Bradford Road or canal tow path and then make a slight climb to East Morton. This is a roller coaster route which climbs through the moors, travels over a dam and past some lovely reservoirs. It is a challenging route, and this should be kept in mind for those who feel they could take up the challenge!

Goddards to Beningbrough Hall

This is a 12.25 mile route from Goddards which can be ridden there and back to double the distance. Goddards is a lovely house and garden and was home to Noel Goddard Terry and his family. You can make yourself at home in the drawing room and learn about the Terry's Chocolate factory nearby, especially if you want to treat yourself to something delicious after the ride. The cycle route heads into the historic city of York and picks up the riverside path beside the River Ouse. The first half of the route is mainly traffic free and turns onto quiet lanes for the second half, taking you through little villages such as Overton and Shipton before reaching Beningbrough Hall.

Towpath Toddle

This is a really family friendly route which is around 10.6 miles and starts and ends at East Riddlesden Hall. There is a tearoom there so you can treat yourself once you've finished! As you leave you take in part of the Leeds to Liverpool Canal, with the route winding along the towpath towards the town of Bingley. Along the route you see various objects from the canal's history and some beautiful flora and fauna too.
