This stunning destination is a must-see for anyone coming to enjoy a stay in our Almerian property. Whether you love spending days on the beach, sampling delicious local cuisine or simply wandering around and taking in marvellous architecture, then Mojacar is for you.
To help get you started, we’ve selected 10 of our unmissable sights and experiences to try during your visit…
1) Discover the Indalo
Discovered in the Cueva de Los Letrero, in the town of Vélez-Blanco, this stylised figure of a man with an arch over his head is known as the Indalo. This comes from the Iberian word ‘Indal’, which means ‘powerful protector god’. Today, the symbol can be found throughout Mojacar, where it has quickly become the symbol of the town and, more widely, the emblem of the province of Almeria. It is thought to protect the residents of the town from bad spirits, although it is also seen as a religious idol.
2) Visit Museo Casa de la Canana
Named after its original resident, who used to sell everyday items and tobacco to their neighbours, this century-old house is now a small museum dedicated to the history of Mojacar. Visitors will enjoy a tour where they learn about the history and culture of the town. Drink in the unique atmosphere as you wander through the rooms, all of which are decorated and furnished with genuine items from the 20th Century. With informative guides and all sorts of gems to uncover, a trip to the Museo Casa de la Canana is a true step back in time and a great way to experience how everyday people lived 100 years ago.
3) Step though the Puerta de la Ciudad
This is the original doorway to the town and is decorated with the two-headed eagle; the emblem of the city. Dating all the way back to the 16th Century, when it was built on the same site as the original Arab gate, it’s a real glimpse into the town’s rich history. The gate was once a marker for the edge of the town as well as the place for paying taxes and duties, making it an obligatory stop for carts who wished to trade. Today it is a popular tourist attraction, with its swathes of bright flowers and picturesque surroundings.
4) Shop at Mojacar Street Market
Like many Spanish towns, Mojacar holds a weekly market selling all kinds of items, from souvenirs to food and clothing. It’s worth a visit if you’re looking for a few bits and pieces to take home with you. Held on Wednesday mornings, you may wish to catch the bus to the market square on top of the hill. Once there, you’ll encounter all of the usual wares, although we’d recommend picking up some fresh oranges and nuts to enjoy during your stay… don’t forget to haggle!
5) Relax at the Mirador de la Plaza Nueva
Perched at the top of the hill, the Plaza Nueva is the centre of the town of Mojacar. As the main meeting point and heart of the community, it always has a lively and welcoming atmosphere which brings people together throughout the year. The plaza is flanked by a range of shops, bars and cafes, so make sure to grab a drink and find a place to enjoy the spectacular panoramic views. Thanks to the high altitude, you can see as far as the Almagrera mountains, taking in the impressive valley on the way.
6) Walk La Mena Footpath
If you love to discover new and unique walking routes during your holiday, don’t miss the chance to explore the La Mena hike. It’s a well-marked, relatively easy route that runs along the unspoiled coastline, with spectacular views over the ocean. Starting at the end of the Mojacar strip, it leads walkers past brilliant blue bays, charming secret coves and several fortresses and watchtowers. Some of these beautiful beaches can only be accessed on foot using this trail, so make sure to pack your swimming costume in case you fancy a quick dip! The round route is around 10km, so you may be glad of a chance to cool off.
7) Drink at Fuente Publica de Mojacar
You’ll find this historic fountain hidden at the foot of the hill. Both tourists and locals come to sample the water, which trickles from the 13 spouts into marble channels. The courtyard itself is full of bright flowers and exquisite details, making it a popular landmark in the town. Make sure to bring a bottle so you can enjoy some of this fresh spring water on the go! The fountain is also a site of great historical importance… it was where Mojácar's last Moorish mayor met the envoy of the Catholic monarchs to discuss Mojacar’s surrender. A plaque commemorates this famous meeting, where the mayor pleaded for his people to be allowed to stay in the town.
8) Explore Iglesia de Santa Maria
This quaint church is a great example of when Mojacar changed from a Muslim to a Christian town. It is thought to be built on the spot of an old Arab mosque and served the purpose of both a religious site and a defensive fort. It has since been declared a Monument of Cultural Interest, as it is one of the few remaining examples of this architecture found in the region. Inside, you can see how the original Muslim structure was expanded and added to by the Christians, including images of the Virgin and Saint Augustine. Although the original alter piece disappeared during the Civil War, it has been replaced by a surprisingly modern fresco created by German artist Michael Sucker in the 1980s.
9) Meet La Mojaqueras
In the square in front of the Iglesia de Santa Maria, you’ll find one of the town’s two statues dedicated to the women of Mojacar. Having been placed here in 1989, she is made from marble and dressed in the traditional dress of the region. The statue holds an Arab scarf with her teeth and carries a water vessel on her head, presumably having filled it at the Fuente Publica de Mojacar.
10) Play at the Marina Golf Course
If you like the idea of hitting a few balls during your break, you won’t want to miss the chance to play at the Marina Golf Mojacar. One of the most beautiful courses available, you’ll have to force yourself to look away from the views in order to take your swing. This golf course has 18 holes; 9 close to the beach and 9 up in the mountains… it really is one of the most varied and beautiful courses around. Visitors are welcome to come and play a round, or even take a lesson with one of their professionals. You can book all of this online here.
Whether you decide to do all of these things, or simply set off and see what you can discover in Mojacar’s winding streets, you’re sure to have a wonderful day out in this picturesque town. With so many hidden gems nestled amongst the gleaming white houses, beautiful beaches and some of the most spectacular views in the region, there’s plenty to discover.
