We’ve picked six of our favourites so that you can start planning your Cornish break today.
Duloe Stone Circle
The smallest stone circle in Cornwall can be found just a 10-minute walk from Duloe Manor. Duloe Stone Circle is nestled on the edge of a field, flanked by deep valleys and consisting of eight large, irregular white quartz blocks. The stones alternate between large and small, and while seven are still standing upright, one has fallen. It’s not known exactly how old the circle is, although there is a reference to the nearby settlement of Stonetown in 1329, which was probably named in reference of the Duloe stone circle.
There was some restoration carried out on the stones in the mid-1800s, which included the removal of a hedge which grew through the circle. It is also thought that there was an attempt to right the fallen stone, but a piece of it unfortunately broke off in the attempt. During this restoration, it was also reported that a Bronze Age ribbon handled urn was unearthed, although it’s unsure whether this was from beneath the stones or the hedge. Due to this, there is some speculation that the circle was an impressive burial monument. What do you think?
Ancient art falconry
With it’s wide, open skies and spectacular scenery, Cornwall is certainly an impressive backdrop for a bird of prey display. If you’d like to get even closer to these magnificent creatures, Ancient Art Falconry is a fantastic choice. Even better, it’s only 20 minutes from Duloe Manor! They offer a range of experiences with their birds, ranging from kids’ sessions to Raptor Awards courses, which are specifically designed for those interested in keeping or working with birds of prey. Learn more about these spectacular birds and experience their strength and grace for yourself – it really is an unforgettable experience!
Ancient art falconry is not an open centre, so all bookings need to made in advance using their website.
Porfell wildlife park
If you still haven’t had your fill of animals, Porfell wildlife park is Cornwall’s biggest exotic animal sanctuary, providing a home to many different creatures from across the world. Ever since the sanctuary opened in 1989, they’ve been rehoming animals and now have a collection which includes zebra, ostrich, meerkats and monkeys… and that’s just the start. Wander through the enclosures and see these beautiful creatures for yourself, while learning more about the conservation and rescue work done by Porfell’s expert team.
As well as seeing the animals, visitors to the park can visit the accurate Maasai Vollage, explore the Woodland Walk and relax in the Savannah Tea Room. For smaller guests, the Children’s Farm provides an opportunity to meet and feed sheep, donkeys, chinchilla and make many more furry friends! For those wishing to get even closer, you can book experience days which offer the chance to meet the Lemurs or even join the animal keepers for a day with the animals.
Just a 15-minute drive from Duloe Manor, Porfell wildlife park is open throughout the year, although opening times do vary. More information about when you can visit, as well as ticket prices and events, can be found on their website.
Polperro
If you’re looking for a traditional, unspoilt fishing village on the Cornish coast, then Polperro – just a 20-minute drive from Duloe Manor – is just the place. With beautiful traditional cottages clinging to the steep hillside, a small harbour with magnificent views and plenty of cafes, pubs and shops, it’s a delightful place to spend a sunny day. With such beautiful scenery, it’s perhaps no surprise that the town is well-loved by local artists. In fact, you can find several galleries showcasing their art throughout the town, and there’s also a popular arts and music festival every June.
Polperro is also a haven for walkers, with some charming coastal footpaths providing amazing sea views. You might even stumble across some golden secluded beaches, often free of the hustle and bustle of tourism. One particularly popular walk takes you from the village to the nearby town of Looe, using a five-mile coastal footpath through this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Also not to be missed is Polperro’s famous tidal pool, which can be found at the base of Chapel Cliff on a small sandy beach. This completely natural pool is more or less a giant rock pool, so don’t forget your bucket and nets! However, the walk down to the pool is quite steep and there are no hand rails, so it is best suited for steady legs.
Looe Golf Club
10 minutes from Duloe Manor, Looe Golf Club was designed by six times Open champion, Harry Vardon. The course combines heath and parkland to create a truly beautiful spot with unmatched views over the Cornish coast and countryside. The 18-hole course measures 5,940 yards and provides an excellent game of golf, whether you’re an expert or beginner. There’s nothing quite like playing a game in that fresh sea air!
Visitors are welcome at the club throughout the year, which has a reputation for being incredibly friendly. Green Fees start at £35 for 18 holes. The club bar has a good selection of food and drink to enjoy after your game and there is also a shop which stocks all kind of equipment, from balls to clubs. Those wishing to improve their game can also book some professional coaching from their expert team, with prices starting at £25 for a 45-minute session.
Monkey Sanctuary
Last but not least, the famous Monkey Sanctuary can be found 15 minutes from Duloe Manor, on the south Cornish coast between Looe and Seaton. The sanctuary has been rehoming and rescuing monkeys since 1964, and visitors can appreciate their hard work while also learning more about the primate residents.
Currently (April 2019) the sanctuary is home to 40 monkeys, including Capuchin and Woolly Monkeys, Barbary Macaques and Marmosets. Although there are plenty of opportunities to spot them, some rescue areas of the sanctuary are out of bounds to visitors as the monkeys recover and are rehabilitated. Guests are still welcome to take a tour of the other enclosures and hear about the animals directly from the expert keepers. There’s also a popular outdoor play area, beautiful wildlife gardens and a charming gift shop and café.
Tickets for the Monkey Sanctuary can be booked in advance using their website.
