From pebbled bays to sandy beaches, Majorca is home to some of the most spectacular beaches in Spain. No matter if you’re after a lazy afternoon building sandcastles or an action-packed day of water sports, there’s something to suit everyone. We’ve picked six of our favourite beaches, all less than a 2-hour drive from our property, to introduce you to during your stay at La Reserva de Biniorella.
Cala Agulla Beach
If you’re looking for a safe, sandy beach where the whole family can spread out and enjoy a day by the sea, then Cala Agulla is a fantastic option. Over 500m long and 50m wide, there’s plenty of room on the golden sand for sunbathing and beach games, while the water is clean and shallow – ideal for swimming and paddling.
The beach is surrounded by pine forests and mountains, giving it a feeling of peace and quiet. However, there’s also plenty of facilities including water sports, paid parking, summer lifeguards, sunbeds, toilets and a bar and restaurant, so it’s easy to spend a few hours soaking up the sun. However, this beach does get busy during the summer, so it may be one to visit during the early morning or late afternoon to really appreciate the beauty of your surroundings.
Cala Formentor Beach
Cala Formentor has been called one of the finest natural beaches in Majorca… and for good reason. Surrounded by woodland and the Tramuntana mountains, it’s got some breathtaking views and is popular with visitors all year round. The beach is around 1km long, but is also much narrower than some of the other beaches on the island. Although there’s not much room for beach games, the water is clear and calm, making it a good choice for kids who love to splash around.
Cala Formentor has all the usual facilities, including showers and WC, summer lifeguard and nearby restaurants. It’s also possible to rent windsurfing equipment, small sailboats and catamarans for a day on the open water! For those who’d rather leave the hard work to someone else, you can join a trip on the glass-bottomed boat which sails from nearby Cala Formentor.
Cala Mondrago Beach
Also known as Caló de n’Alis, Cala Mondrago is a sand beach between two rocky headlands. Much of the area around the beach was declared as a National Park in 1992, protecting it from further development and giving this costal gem an isolated feel, away from the hustle and bustle. However, it can get busy in the summer months. If you’d rather search for a quieter spot, the neighbouring beach of s’Amarador is just a 400m walk away, along some spectacular coastline.
Cala Mondrago is known for its fantastic blue waters, which are kept calm and clear by the surrounding headlands. This, combined with the fine white sand, makes it a popular spot for snorkelling. In terms of facilities, there’s a free car park not too far from the beach, two beach bars, restaurants and even the opportunity to hire a paddle boat!
Es Calo des Moro Beach
Some people claim that Es Calo des Moro Beach is the most beautiful in Majorca, but you’ll have to make your mind up for yourself! It’s looked after and managed by a foundation called 'Amics d'Es Calò des Moro', meaning it’s not got any of the facilities found at the other beaches. However, if you’re after a beautiful and unspoilt bay to relax in during a sunny afternoon, you can’t go far wrong.
It’s a very small beach where the water can reach quite far up the sand. During busy times, you may struggle to stretch out on a towel, making this more a beach for swimmers and explorers than sunbathers. However, the sparkling water and beautiful views more than make up for the lack of space. There’s also a cavern on one side which swimmers can explore. Some adventurous souls even brave the climb up the side of the rock for invigorating jump into the water.
The beach has a makeshift car park – make sure not to be put off by the ‘private property’ sign. Although the beach is privately owned, it’s open to the public. The short walk down to the sea is quite perilous, with rocky outcrops rather than stairs, so perhaps best avoided if any of your party are unsteady on their feet.
Cala Pi Beach
Set between tall cliffs, this beach has a wonderful atmosphere. The beach itself is quite narrow – only 45m long- but does stretch back far enough for visitors to find some space on the sand. The highlight of a visit to Cala Pi Beach is perhaps the walk down the steps. Although it is rather steep, it gives visitors a spectacular view over the fine, golden sands and the turquoise waters are sure to take your breath away.
You can hire sunbeds and parasols on the beach and a lifeguard is on duty during the summer months. There’s also free parking. All of this, along with the soft sand and shallow water, makes Cala Pi beach a great choice for anyone visiting with children. For those who want to explore underneath the surface, the snorkelling and diving is fantastic and you can always refuel in Cala Pi itself, a beautiful and quiet resort set around the cove.
Portals Nous Beach
Last but not least, Portals Nous beach is also referred to as Cala Bendinat. Around 100m long, it’s another beach made up of fine sand and beautiful clear water. Portals Nous is known for its lovely views across the marina to the small island a little way out to sea. Enjoy a day playing in the sand, before refuelling at the small beach bar, or taking a short walk to the modern café, where you can enjoy a snack while admiring the beautiful seascape.
One thing to note is that the water here is not particularly shallow, so make sure to keep an eye on children. However, there’s plenty of room to run and play on the sand. It’s also a fantastic spot for water sports, with jet skis, kayaks and windsurfing equipment all available to hire.
If a day by the sea is a ‘must have’ during your next holiday, then Majorca is a wonderful choice. With a car, you can reach almost all the island’s many beautiful beaches, from large, bustling bays with plenty of facilities to secret hidden coves.
