The town of Ferragudo, in Portugal's stunning Algarve, is small and traditional. It lies on the banks of the River Arade estuary, across from better known town Portimão. This beautiful little place is characterised by many traditional little fisherman's homes; white-washed and facing the riverfront.
Palm-fringed gardens run up towards the main square, Praça Rainha Dona Leonor. This square holds a number of cafés from which to enjoy a lovely afternoon pastry or coffee and round the corner at the quay you can enjoy brilliant views across the water from the selection of restaurants on offer.
Ferragudo is home to tiny little streets and compact buildings that you can reach from the main square. There are some great beaches to enjoy, with golden sand and a rocky backdrop. The Praia Grand and the Angrinha beach are two of the favourites; the former is the town's main beach and it's from here you can see the little medieval castle on the rock – the fort of São João do Arade. The latter is less known and a bit quieter but just as lovely. The estuary and river are good for sports and some lovely evening strolls are to be had through the town too.
