In the 1890s, a railway was built by the Algeciras (Gibraltar) Railway Company Ltd between Algeciras, right down in the south of Spain, and Ronda slightly further north. It was masterminded by British engineer John Morrison and his friend Alexander Henderson. The line connected with the main network to Madrid and acted as a gateway to the rest of Europe.
Nowadays the train journey from Algeciras makes a lovely day trip and takes you through stunning scenery and historic sites up to Ronda. The route runs on a single track down the Guadiaro valley and passes the beautiful Genal valley too, a place where there is limited road access, pretty villages and a number of walking routes. The journey captures the best of Britain during the Industrial Revolution and you can enjoy the novelty of spotting British Victorian railway memorabilia along the way. There are gastronomic surprises at different stations en route as well and, of course, the stunning views. Why not hop off to take a stroll through the unspoiled countryside before continuing on your journey.
