There is lots on offer for you to do in the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Perhaps one of the best is a Canoe ride down the River Derwent.
The River flows through the eastern edge of this AONB. Used by anglers as well as being of huge ecological value, it is essential to gain the landowners permission before using it. If you are canoeing here then just up river from Kirkham is a popular stretch for recreational activities. Why not take a picnic, travel from Old Malton to Kirkham Priory and enjoy the sights and sounds of the river wildlife. It is about 8 miles of easy canoeing with no obstacles and you could spot all kinds of birds, like Kingfishers flitting around the foliage and perhaps, if you're lucky, an otter or two. Then when you get to Kirkham the Priory is a great place for a rest, beautifully situated on the banks of the river.
If you're not a regular canoeist, or if you are planning on trying the sport for the first time there are a number of clubs and courses for beginners that you can take part in. Check out the websites for River Mountain Experience and Experience Adventure as a starting point.
