Caving in the Yorkshire Dales

Posted by Luci Ackers on 4 March 2015

Ever tried caving? It is a popular sport in the Yorkshire Dales where the landscape is perfect for it and great caverns and cave systems have formed in the craggy limestone rock over thousands of years.

Caves are only one part of the magnificent scenery, and if you are interested in the geology of the area, or just fancy experiencing Yorkshire from another angle then a trip down into the beautiful passages and shafts, with a local guide is great fun and really interesting. Exploring the caves takes knowledge and equipment so it is best to join a course run by a qualified instructor, and these are usually suitable for individuals, couples and groups, for both adults and children (accompanied).

Alternatively you could visit one of the show caves such as White Scar Cave, Ingleborough Cave or Stump Cross Caverns for the chance to take a look around. There is the opportunity for members of the public to be lowered into Gaping Gill by a winch to see the dramatic main chamber from underground. However you decide to explore these places of natural beauty, the incredible calcite formations, the stalactites and stalagmites are certainly worth the descent!

Yorkshire Dales Guides provide caving courses and instruction for different skill levels as well as abseiling days or half days too.

Gaping Gill opening weeks only happen a couple of times a year for members of the public and the Bradford Pothole Club website and the Craven Pothole Club website are the places to watch for details on this.
