Anglesey is a beautiful, diverse part of the world, with everything from beaches to wetlands to discover. Along with this is, holidaymakers can expect to enjoy some delicious cuisine, lovingly made using local ingredients and served amongst spectacular surroundings. To help you find your way, we've put together a list of some of our favourite places to eat out in Anglesey.
Harry's Bistro, Beaumaris
Our top choice, Harry's Bistro, is situated in the vicinity of the stunning Henllys Hall, a nineteenth century castle that sits on the hills overlooking the historic town of Beaumaris.
Beaumaris is a coastal town on the Isle of Anglesey, known for its impressive Castle that dates from the thirteenth century. It sits at the eastern entrance to the Menai Strait and parts of its medieval town walls, which were constructed in the early 1400s, can still be seen in places where they once surrounded the town.
Beaumaris has its own good selection of restaurants and pubs but Harry's Bistro is only a short walk away, and certainly worth a visit. The place originally opened in 2004 but the current owners took over four years later and have been there ever since. Chef Simon Doyle and front of House partner Nia Roberts were welcomed to the establishment having built something of a name for themselves, previously working at various restaurants across the island. Though no one really knows who the mysterious Harry was, the bistro's name stuck and has remained unchanged.
Simon and Nia are known for their bistro-style menu and great service. They have created a relaxed and unhurried environment in which to enjoy good food to the beautiful surrounding views of Beaumaris and the Snowdonia mountains. Simon creates a traditional Welsh menu and brings a contemporary feel to things with his own modern dishes as well, using fresh and local ingredients.
They work hard to create a changing menu of seasonal dishes from locally sourced products, using local suppliers when possible. The impressive menu is complimented by a good wine list and accompanied by a great location. The pair pride themselves on the easy, relaxed atmosphere of Harry's, where any diner is sure to enjoy their visit, eat good food and come away a satisfied customer.
Dylan's, Menai Bridge
Just 10 minutes drive away, in Menai Bridge, you'll find Dylans. Located right on the water, this restaurant is a go-to for fresh, local seafood. Sit and enjoy the beautiful views over the strait while tucking into roasted lobster, seafood chowder or sea bass tacos – to name just a few! The restaurant has gone from strength to strength since it opened in 2012, adding an enclosed terrace and expanding their kitchen and menu several times. But even with this, the restaurant has retained its friendly atmosphere and personal touch, so make sure to pay them a visit!
The Marram Grass, Newborough
A little further away (around 30 minutes in the car), the Marram Grass is a popular eatery in Newborough. This charming restaurant specialises in seasonal, local food, even growing and rearing some of their own ingredients. This is what they use as a base for all their dishes, adding products from other local Welsh producers to create a mouth-watering menu.
Part of the charm of The Marram Grass is its rustic warmth. It's authentic without being old fashioned – the building was originally a potting shed and the tin sheet roof and bleeze block walls are much the same. The informal and relaxed environment really complements the ideals of the owners, letting the food speak for itself. Make sure to pay a visit and sample their delicious offerings.
Sosban & the Old Butchers, Menai Bridge
Also in Menai Bridge, Sosban & the Old Butchers is an old Butcher's shop, and offers a slightly different dining experience. Rather than ordering from a menu, they craft a selection of dishes using whatever local produce available on the day, creating a delicious and totally unique meal. The restaurant is open from Wednesday to Saturday, and the chef once worked for Marcus Wareing before returning to Anglesey. It's certainly not a place to be missed!
Red Boat Ice Cream Parlour, Beaumaris
Last but not least, who can ever resist ice cream? There are five Red Boat Ice Cream parlours across Anglesey and North Wales, and one is only a short distance from Henllys. Specialising in Italian Gelato ice cream, which they make in their production lab in Llangegni, Red Boat are famous for serving delicious ice cream. In fact, their Tiramisu flavour won a Great Taste Award in 2020! Their Beaumaris parlour is nestled in the heart of the village within a timeless medieval building, carefully restored and fitted out with a welcoming, modern interior. They also serve some delicious soups, hot drinks and other snacks, so you'll want to make yourself at home.
