Events in Kent 2016 | Turner Exhibition

Posted by Luci Ackers on 10 February 2016

To celebrate its fifth year, the Turner Contemporary will be hosting an amazing exhibition of the works of JMW Turner, the famous Romanticist landscape artist after whom the gallery was named.

The Turner Contemporary was designed by Sir David Chipperfield and opened in 2011, right on the seafront in Margate. Turner himself had many connections to Margate, originally sent there late in the 18th century. He produced a series of works depicting the town and went on to return to Margate frequently from then onwards. The love for the sea that he developed in Margate would stay with him for the rest of his life and inspire a great many of his famous works. It seems only fitting that the Turner Contemporary should sit overlooking the bay in the same spot that was originally the site of the guest house where Turner used to stay.

The gallery hosts a rolling programme of exhibitions and events, though there is always at least one Turner on display. The idea behind the gallery was to bridge a gap between historic and contemporary art while celebrating Turner's association with Margate and the importance it had for him.

Adventures in Colour is the second major Turner exhibition to take place in the gallery since 2011. This one marks the fifth anniversary of its opening and will be displaying 70 works of both watercolour and oil paintings by the famous artist. The exhibition will be focussing on Turner's exploration of colour and his exploitation of new materials and experimental techniques. Admission to the gallery is free, so it is well worth stopping in if you're in the area! The exhibition is running from the 8th October 2016 to the 8th January 2017.

There is always something good going on in the gallery, so take a look at the website to find all their upcoming events and to check opening times. https://www.turnercontemporary.org
