The Lake District in Cumbria offers some of the most spectacular scenery in Britain. But if you're in Cumbria and really want to find your ideal photo moment, try taking a journey to any of the following. These fantastic spots are five of our favourite viewpoints in Cumbria.
Ullswater
Jump aboard one of the ferry tours on the lake of Ullswater and, as well as exploring the area, you'll get to experience the incredible panoramas of the peaks and dales which border the expanse of water. The glassy lake and beautiful hilly mountain ranges stretch out before you in all directions.
Piel Castle
Just off the shore of the Furness Peninsula is Piel Island, with its castle standing on the southern corner. The Castle is certainly worth a visit. It is a 14th century ruin with a large keep and it once guarded the passage to and from Furness Abbey. Views from this island, particularly towards the mainland, are impressive and you will also be able to see across to the islands of Walney and Roa.
Wasdale
For a quieter retreat, try heading west to Wasdale with its lake Wastwater at the centre. Wasdale is less known and less busy than some other places in the Lake District and you can enjoy the unspoilt beauty of the area. From the screes of Wastwater (steep slopes rising up at the south-east end of the lake) there are fantastic views out over the long expanse of water, with the impressive mountains surrounding its shores.
Tarn Hows
Tarn Hows is a man-made lake and can be reached by a popular, reasonably easy-going footpath. Its surroundings include the wonderful mountains that frame a lot of the Lake District Lakes, but woodland and greenery also cover the banks, giving the area a rich freshness.
Morecambe Bay
One of the favourite ones is the simple but effective view out over Morecambe Bay. The bay lies off the west coast between Cumbria and Lancashire and often provides rather special sunsets which get reflected back in the watery horizon. From the seaside town of Grange-over-Sands or from Arnside, opposite, you'll see the Kent River estuary as it winds its way out into the sea. This view is best experienced in the evening.
