Discover all that North Yorkshire has to offer and walk amongst its different and varying landscapes. There is woodland and moorland, ruins and riverbanks all at your disposal. Here are some of our favourite walking areas in North Yorkshire.
Dalby Forest, Bridestones and Dove Dale
This route is just under two miles and takes around an hour. This is a delightfully short and easy going walk through the North York Moors to the sculptured sandstone Bridestones. These famous Bridestones are on Staindale Moor and are natural sandstone rock formations that have been eroded over thousands of years, creating their interesting shapes. They were first created by glacial movement during the Ice Age! Start this walk at the Staindale car park.
Fountains Abbey
Take one of the many National Trust walks at the magnificent Fountains Abbey. The Vistas Walk is great for those who want to explore the full estate. A five mile route will lead you round the boundary, supplying excellent views of the Abbey and the surrounding North York Moors as you go. This walk should take you around two and a half hours and you will have the opportunity to wander the deer park and the 18th century water garden too.
Wood Sculptures, St Roberts Cave and Knaresborough Castle
This is a wonderful walk of discovery which will interest and delight all. The walk starts at Knaresborough and is around three miles long. You will pass quirky old shops, a fascinating chapel built into the rock, woodland playgrounds and much more during this route that will take you around two hours. Keep your eyes open for fantastic wood sculptures, visit a hermit's cave and explore riverside and woodland settings before following roads to the town centre and rounding off the journey with a visit to the castle.
Robin Hood's Bay to Boggle Hole
Robin Hood's Bay is a pretty little village situated on the eastern coast of the North York Moors. The town is a maze of little streets and its history is filled with stories of smuggling. The natural isolation and protection on three sides by marshy moorland made it the ideal spot for illicit dealings. Walk along the cliff-top path to the picturesque inlet of Boggle Hole. You'll be on the Cleveland Way National Trail and can turn your journey into a circular walk by looping back round further inland, following the old disused rail way line. Whilst travelling to Boggle hole you will be met with fantastic panoramic views back to Robin Hood's Bay and out across the sea.
Howardian Hills
Get a taste of the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty by walking part of the Howardian Way. This long distance walking route travels the length of the AONB, but if you pick it up from near Castle Howard you can follow it to the English Heritage-owned Kirkham Priory, which is the final leg of the route. You will enjoy a range of different scenery along this walk, and will see much of the area's history. Once at the priory wander along the River Derwent and sit for a while in the peaceful priory grounds.
