Over the summer of 2016 Cumbria is playing homage to its native sheep, the Herdwick, by hosting a trail of beautifully decorated model ewes in various locations throughout the Lake District, between Keswick and Windermere.
Herdwicks are a hardy sheep, they are stocky and perfectly adapted to life on the Cumbrian fells. It is thought that the farming of Herdwicks originated here back in the 10th century, and they have flourished ever since. If you're visiting for the trail, you're sure to spot the real deal out and about in the countryside.
Go Herdwick
A flock of 60 life-sized Herdwick models, all uniquely decorated, have been positioned in unlikely locations throughout the heart of the Lake District, ready and waiting to be spotted by you!
Trail guides are available on the website and will provide you with a full colour map along with the towns and locations of all the sheep. Alternatively grab a Hide & Seek Lamb trail booklet and search for the 48 small lambs in Keswick and Windermere.
The Calvert Trust
Each sheep is decorated beautifully and all the funds that have ben raised by the scheme will go to the Lake District Calvert Trust, who are aiming to deliver challenging outdoor activities for those with disabilities. The sheep will be in position up until Sunday 4th September and the auction for the ewes and lambs will be held on the 8th October 2016 if you fancy giving one of them a home.
