Holkham Hall

Posted by Luci Ackers on 7 April 2015

Holkham Hall, beautifully situated on the North Norfolk Coast, is the privately owned mansion house of the Earls of Leicester. Built in the 18th century, with a beautiful Palladian façade, evident in its precise architecture, it sits amongst 3,000 acres of magnificent parkland. Holkham Estate makes a wonderful day out, the parkland has become home to herds of both Fallow and Red deer and provides hours of entertainment in the form of its different walks and nature trails. There is the Ice House and Walled Garden to discover, the Woodland play area for younger visitors, the lake with its cruises and the stable buildings!

The Holkham Estate is usually host to a range of fantastic events throughout the year. Some of the most popular of these are the open air concerts, but the annual August Bank Holiday weekend will usually draw a huge crowd and has a range of events. Open air theatre productions, the country fair, exhibitions and family days, walks, tours and seasonal events happen throughout the year and are all great reasons to visit. Christmas at Holkham is always a favourite and transforms the Hall into a hub of festivities.

The Hall itself is open to the public during the spring and summer months. Visitors can explore a number of the grand rooms like the beautiful columned Marble Hall, the magnificent Libraries, the Statue Gallery, Old Kitchen and the Chapel. Holkham Hall is a member of the Treasure Houses group as well as the Historic House Association and the wide open spaces are typical of its 18th century design. Stop off for a pick-me-up at the café and enjoy a range of homemade goods and then spend the afternoon wandering the spectacular grounds.
