Cornwall is the home of a great many fine heritage locations. If you're staying in the area you have a fantastic base from which to explore the nearby historic houses and beautiful gardens.
One place you really wont want to miss is Lanhydrock. This National Trust property in Bodmin mostly dates back to Victorian times when it was refurbished following a tragic fire in the early 1880s. Some sections of the building, however, along with the original gatehouse survive from as early as the 1600s. Lanhydrock is a country house and estate that covers 1,000 acres with parkland, woods and riverside paths to wander.
Explore the house and see the contrast between 'upstairs' and 'downstairs' living. The building has a homely feel in the various family rooms, but you will also be able to see the servants quarters and the kitchen. Admire the portrait collection and the old books in the library before heading into the beautiful gardens. As well as the house, these gardens are listed and feature an immaculate parterre, and the slightly wilder higher gardens. Why not take a tour, led by one of the garden team, to learn more about the plants and history? The extensive grounds are great for walks and there is access down to the river Fowey. The reception area will have walks guides if you want to make sure you're seeing the best bits!
