Our Top 5 Favourite Historic Sites Near Turunç, Turkey

Posted by Luci Ackers on 3 February 2015

Make the most of a holiday in Turkey and visit some of the incredible historic sites on offer around the Bozburun peninsular. Here are our top five places to visit:

Cleopatra Island

Just over half an hour from Marmaris, sitting in the gulf of Gokava is Cleopatra's Island. As well as its unique beach the island is known for being steeped in history. Myth has it that the island was a gift to the famous Egyptian queen from her lover Marc Anthony and, being later under Roman rule, the island houses several structures from this era worth visiting. Ruins include a Roman agora, amphitheatre, temples, churches, baths and harbour ruins.

Knidos

The ancient settlement of Knidos is situated right at the end of the Datça Peninsula and was part of the ancient Greek Dorian-Hexapolis, it features excellent examples of Carian architecture in an unspoilt archaeological site. One of the significant ruins is the Hellenistic amphitheatre that was built with a panoramic view out over the sea. The largest is a 6km long necropolis, and there are temples, an altar, agora and churches to see.

Dalyan Rock Tombs

High up on the rocks overlooking the Dalyan River sit a group of ancient Lycan tombs that have been carved into the cliff face. Rectangular ones known as 'pigeon nests' can be seen beneath the six main larger ones. These six are carved to resemble the facades of temples and most likely date before the 4th century BCE.

Old Town Marmaris

Explore the streets of Marmaris Old Town centre. If you visit the old harbour, you will see the traditional shopping bazaar and fishing boats, as well as the ancient Marmaris Castle.

Amos

This is one of the little towns along from Turunç, set into a small bay. Here you can see the fairly well preserved remains of an amphitheatre as well as remnants of towers, outer ramparts and the defensive town walls. The earliest settlement at Amos dates back to the Hellenistic period.
