If the warmer weather has sparked the motivation to get out in the garden this spring, then head on over to a Plant Hunters' Fair for some inspiration. Pick up key facts, information and stunning plants from passionate people in the know.
The Plant Hunters' Fairs are fantastic events hosted at prestigious gardens all over the region. A number of highly respected nurseries and specialists have stalls at the fair and are on hand to share their knowledge and tips. The aim of the event is to provide quality and diversity from a select number of specialist growers; those that exhibit are there by invite only and all really know their stuff. Entrance to the fairs and the stunning gardens that they're based in is either free or a reduced rate. The entrance fee is non-profit for the fair itself and so the only cost (if any) would go straight to the garden that hosts the event. Sometimes these are protected or historic locations or charitable trusts.
A number of Plant Hunters' Fairs take place during the spring, and just half an hour from Blore Hall is the one at Carsington Water. Just south of the Peak District National Park, Carsington Water reservoir is a popular place for leisure activities and birdwatching. The visitor centre, on the eastern edge, has a little shop and a cafe/restaurant as well as inside learning area. There's also a bird hide with good views, lots of wildlife and a country park with a nice lot of space that's ideal for the Plant Hunters' Fair.
On the 30th May 2016 the fair gets underway from 10am to 4pm and sees the likes of Chris Cooke Plants, an RHS Gold Medalist, the Cotswold Garden Flowers and Tissington Nursery among many others. This is a fantastic opportunity to buy craft-grown, rare or interesting plants that are cultivated by specialists. The enthusiasm at the Plant Hunters' Fair is infectious; you'll find passionate people sharing their knowledge. Each stall is different, unique and run by experts.
With 8-miles of walks to enjoy along paved paths, and the abundance of wildlife around the reservoir, you can really make a day of it. Explore the surroundings, pay a visit to the visitors' centre and then round the day off with a pick-me-up cuppa! Found out more information and see the full list of exhibitors on the website here.
