The Severn Valley Heritage Railway

Posted by Luci Ackers on 8 April 2015

There is no better way to see the beauty of the River Severn than to take a trip on the Severn Valley Railway. This heritage railway is a stretch of the old Victorian line that travels from Bridgnorth to Kidderminster and makes a great day out for those wanting to experience a bit of history or enjoy the Shropshire scenery along the valley of the river.

The Severn Valley Railway carries roughly 300,000 passengers each year. It is a 16-mile route that runs predominantly steam locomotives and a number of diesel ones as well. Visitors can travel the route in full or stop off at any of the six small stations en route and explore the little towns. Each of the stops offers something of interest, whether it's the National Trust estate at Hampton Loade, the Engine House Visitor Centre at Highley or the Jubilee Gardens at Bewdley.

The line was completed in 1862 and linked Hartlebury to Shrewsbury. However, British Rail closed the line in 1963. The track was due to be bulldozed two years later but the formation of the Severn Valley Railway Society saved it. A mixed bunch of people answered an ad in a local paper in 1965 and came forward to help preserve a small 16-mile stretch of this historic railway system. Now 2015 marks the 50th anniversary for this railway and the formation of the SVR Society.

The heritage railway and the SVR Charitable Trust often holds events, galas and special days throughout the year, aiming to continue to provide an authentic experience of the Golden Age of travel and encourage a meaningful understanding of the power of steam. Why not go along to one of the costume events to really step back in time? Alternatively you might want to treat yourself to a special meal in one of the vintage carriages; the trains provide a dining service for any occasion so you can sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery while eating a delicious meal in true style.

In 2000 one of the SVR's steam trains even starred in a Harry Potter promotional tour of Scotland and England. Taw Valley was the name of the train used, it was painted scarlet and given a 'Hogwarts Express' nameplate. J K Rowling herself rode the locomotive from station to station for signings.

The past 50 years have seen the Severn Valley Railway become incredibly popular as a heritage railway and their vision for the next 50 years is to create a heritage railway worthy of UNESCO credibility and to become internationally recognised for its history and importance. Take a look at the website here to plan a visit.
