Leeds Castle, priding itself on being one of the 'loveliest castles in the world', does certainly not fall short of its claim. The medieval wonder is set into 500 acres of beautiful parkland and holds stories and secrets ranging through the last 900 years!
Though much of the castle now dates from the 1800s, there has been a Norman stronghold in place here since the 12th century. It has had a number of purposes and welcomed key figures from the likes of Henry VIII to Winston Churchill. Each generation has left its mark and as you explore the rooms you can see the interior refurbishment of the 1920s and 30s. The castle is wonderfully situated on an island in a lake formed by the River Len in Kent and there are extensive grounds surrounding it. Take a stroll through the culpeper garden, or the wood garden spanning along the banks of the river. Take a break and sit for a while in the Lady Baillie garden, bask on the terrace and enjoy the mediterranean planting.
The grounds are family orientated with lots to do, when walking through the parkland keep your eyes peeled for the wildlife, or if it's activities you are after then play a round of golf on the beautiful course or enjoy a segway tour. Younger ones will love the Knight's Realm Playground, or you could take a trip to the large maze! The site is even home to a Go Ape tree-top adventure. And once you've seen as much as you want you can round off your trip with a pick-me-up cuppa and pice of cake in the Fairfax Restaurant.
At certain times of the year Leeds Castle is host to falconry displays from the Bird of Prey Centre and there is punting available as well, you'll glide across the moat, through the ancient arches and be able to admire the mighty castle from a beautiful perspective. The northern end of the castle sits on a jut of land surrounded by moat and when viewed from across the water it looks as though it's rising up from the depths.
