Viehhofen, the Glemmtal Valley

Posted by Luci Ackers on 26 March 2015

In the Austrian Alps, the village of Viehhofen is fortunate enough to lie between some of the most famous tourist destinations in Austria; Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Zell am See and Kaprun. At just a few minutes drive away, visitors can take advantage of the tourism in these towns. Viehhofen itself has managed to remain smaller and retains the idyllic charm of a quiet alpine village.

As the second most popular country in Europe for skiers, the resorts in Austria are renowned for being picturesque and of high quality. Viehhofen is situated in Salzburg in the Glemmtal Valley. It is great for snow sports at just 5 minutes on the free shuttle from the first ascent to the Ski-circus of Saalbach-Hinterglemm and Leogang. The resorts cater for all ages and abilities and the nearby Kitzsteinhorn glacier offers skiing almost all year round, with many of the cable cars and lifts operating throughout the year too. Viehhofen has its own ski school for adults and for children older than 3, so don't worry if you're all new to it!

During the summer the area's charm and beauty means it is also a brilliant location for mountain walking and hiking; it is an added bonus that a lot of the cable lifts still run. The peaks of the Glemmtal Valley, which are reached by lift during ski season, are crisscrossed by bike trails in the summer months. Keen mountain bikers can cycle to the top to experience the terrain and discover the amazing views. Of course there's always the option to hop on a cable lift to the top with your bike and then have only the easy descent back down to enjoy the surroundings.
