Whale Watching in La Gomera

Posted by Katy Peck on 16 January 2019

La Gomera has a diameter of only 22 -25 km, but it certainly fits a lot into this relatively small area. With a wealth of mountains and ravines, turquoise bays and lush laurel forests, there’s no shortage of spectacular landscapes to explore. And all this natural beauty doesn’t stop at the shoreline – the Atlantic Ocean is teaming with wildlife and aquatic fauna, all just waiting to be discovered.

One of the best ways to explore these underwater depths is Scuba Diving, where you’re sure to be enchanted by the colours and life beneath the waves. However, if you have your sights set on something a little bigger, book yourself onto one of the island’s many tours and set out in search of those Mammoths of the sea… whales.

Whales and Dolphins in La Gomera

The ocean to the South West of La Gomera offers an opportunity to see a unique collection of marine mammals. With its sheltered waters, year-round mild temperatures and steady food supply, it’s the perfect place for dolphins and whales to convene. There are even some permanent residents in these waters, so the chances of spotting some aquatic displays during your tour are quite high.

23 species of dolphins and whales have been spotted in the water around La Gomera, six of which are regular visitors to the island. Most commonly, visitors see groups of the resident Bottlenose Dolphins, known for their intelligence and playful nature. With their short nose and curved, ‘smiling’ mouth, Bottlenoses are the most recognisable type of dolphin and often swim alongside the tour boats. Rough-toothed, Striped Common and Spotted Dolphins have also been spied bounding amongst the waves.

In addition, a range of whales can regularly be found in the ocean surrounding La Gomera. These include Pilot whales, a pod of approximately 300 of which have made their home in the waters between La Gomera and its neighbour Tenerife. Pilot whales range between 4 and 6m long, and prefer deep waters. They have very strong social bonds and stay in their groups throughout their lives, which means you have a good chance of spotting one blowing a jet of water into the air.

In addition, visitors can also sometimes glimpse larger whales such as Beaking, Fin, Sei, Bryde’s or Sperm whales in this area. With such a range of species frequenting this part of the world, you never know what you might see! On the odd occasion, Blue Whales have also been seen close to the island.

One major point to remember; although the sighting rates around La Gomera are generally very good – reaching nearly 100% in the springtime – nothing is guaranteed. But even if you don’t catch a glimpse of one of these creatures on your trip, you can still enjoy the beautiful blue waters, swooping sea birds and warm sunshine. Sit back and enjoy the view from this unique vantage point, and make the most of the expert knowledge of your local guide. Who knows, you might even be treated to a visit from a sea turtle!

Respectful Whale Watching

One thing to remember when whale watching is that you’re the guests, and the whales are the hosts. This is why we always recommend that you book with a tour operator who practices respectful and sustainable whale watching.

Tour guides which practice this observe the animals’ behaviour and adapt the trip accordingly, making sure that whales and dolphins are not disturbed within their natural environment. For example, on many occasions the animals may approach the boat or attempt to swim in the bow wave – a great experience for all involved! Alternatively, they may keep their distance, in which case the tour guide will simply move on while maintaining a respectful and legally mandatory distance. This ensures that the whales and dolphins are not distressed by unwanted visitors.
