Here you can also find Santa’s Grotto and lots of gifts and toys for you to purchase, great for kids and a spot of Christmas shopping!
There is also the Torchlight Procession through Edinburgh’s Old Town on the 30th December which involves locals lighting torches and making their way through the streets of Old Town. The event attracts many visitors each year and is an amazing sight!
Perth
In November, Perth holds its own chocolate festival where you can find sweet treats from all around. It doesn’t stop at just food either! You can find all sorts of chocolate-related presents such as chocolate-scented candles. They also hold workshops and demonstrations so you can learn the art of making chocolate.
Perth also holds its own Christmas market which offers a range of homemade and traditional gifts. You can find tasty treats and new foods to try while enjoying a warm cup of cocoa! This is perfect for the family, as children will find it enchanting and you can enjoy a spot of Christmas shopping.
Glasgow
Each year in Glasgow people gather in George’s Square to witness the Christmas lights being turned on. The impressive square is lit up by lights draped around every corner while an impressive showcase of fireworks really sets off the evening.
In George’s Square at Christmas you can also find a large outdoor ice rink. You can rent out a pair of boots and whizz around it in the crisp winter air. This is also a great idea for kids! Teach them how to skate and have a giggle whilst you’re at it!
Hogmanay
Hogmanay is what the Scots call New Year’s Eve. It is a huge deal in Scotland with masses of celebrations occurring all across the country.
In Stirling, they hold one of the biggest events of the year and the city has even recently been voted better than Edinburgh for its Hogmanay celebrations! The festivities take place at Stirling Castle, with visitors gathering around it for the evening’s events. Each year there is a selection of artists who perform on stage at the castle for the crowd below, with a spectacular firework display to see in the New Year.
Edinburgh holds a huge street party at Edinburgh Castle. This also consists of artists such as Madness, Biffy Clyro, and Groove Armada performing at the Concert in the Gardens. There are fairground rides, food stalls, and of course fireworks at midnight! Other traditions include the ‘Loony Dook’, where locals throw themselves into the icy sea in order to raise money for charity. In Aberdeen, locals also set fire to rags on wire, swing them around, and throw them into the sea!
