Turkey is a popular holiday spot for summer holidays, family getaways, and romantic breaks. In the summer months the weather is spectacular with temperatures averaging in the high 20s. However, it isn’t commonly known that Turkey is enjoyable in the winter as well. The temperature sits at around 15°C and there are still plenty of things to get up to!
Skiing
There are many skiing resorts in Turkey, with the most popular being Uludag. The Uludag Mountain is the highest in northwest Turkey with it standing at a huge 8,343ft! Uludag Ski Resort features 26 pistes and is suitable for skiers of all levels, with a large section for beginners. The resort is open from December until March as this is high season for skiers. There are plenty of places to stay on the resort with 27 hotels to choose from!
The Palandöken Ski Centre is also a popular ski resort for winter sun in Turkey and lies towards the east of the country. The mountain itself stands at 3,185m high and is covered in snow for around four to five months throughout the winter, making it perfect for winter sport fans. There is also an array of four and five star hotels for you to stay in for a memorable trip.
Sight-seeing
There are many tourist attractions and sights to see in Turkey that are just as beautiful in the winter as they are in the summer. This means you won’t have to deal with the large crowds of people, you can get better shots on your camera and won’t need to queue up for most of the attractions and shops!
Sights such as Ephesus, Hagia Sophia, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, and the Grand Bazaar are all available to you in the winter and are almost deserted with just locals and a few tourists mingling around. Spend more time at these places and discover things in more depth – something you wouldn’t have been able to do in the hustle and bustle of summer.
Foods
There are many Turkish cuisines for you to try on your travels. For example, the ‘kumpir’ is a fun little dish which is essentially just a loaded baked potato. As well as the traditional toppings, you can choose from more elaborate ones such as hotdogs, corn, and even olives! There are the more unusual tastes such as Tavuk Gögsü which is a chicken breast dessert. Sound disgusting? The meat is boiled, shredded down, and cooked with milk, sugar, vanilla, and other sweet ingredients. After that is it usually topped with cinnamon.
Of course, there are some interesting drinks that you can try as well. There is a national drink called Ayran which is a cold yoghurt beverage mixed with salt. You either love it or hate it, depending on your tastes!
