One star attraction of Cumbria is the Theatre by the Lake. The theatre first opened in 1999 and is located on the shores of Derwentwater. Since its opening it has staged more than 100 plays and earned itself a good reputation. The theatre hosts a whole range of different events and productions throughout the year including drama dance, music and talks.
Words by the Water is an annual literature event at the Theatre. It is a week-long festival of words and ideas that brings writing to the stage and invites a large number of writers, speakers and authors to have their say. Their words are their own and their views are unrehearsed, making this a lively and interesting festival for the audience. Many of the speakers are well known and the festival brings a selection of talks, workshops, book launches, lectures and exhibitions to the Theatre by the Lake.
This year the festival is taking place between the 6th – 15th March 2015 and Michael Buerk, Alan Johnson, Ben Okri, Claire Tomalin and Helen Macdonald are among the many speakers.
