Catch of the day in Pembrokeshire

Posted by Katy Peck on 20 February 2020

Nestled on the edge of the spectacular Pembrokeshire coast, there are lots of chances for guests to enjoy the water at St Brides Castle. From long walks on the beach to water sports, there’s nothing quite like getting out and enjoying that fresh sea air. We spoke with Paul Graham, Site Manager at St Brides Castle, about one of his guests’ favourite activities.

“There are many ways in which you can pass the time in Pembrokeshire,” says Paul. “The one thing that draws people to the area from all corners of the world is the quality and the diversity of the local fishing spots. Pembrokeshire is home to some of the best fishing spots in the United Kingdom, so no matter if it’s coarse fishing, still water fishing, game fishing or sea fishing, you’ll find it here!”

Here Paul tells us about the different types of fishing available during a holiday at St Brides. Whether you’re a seasoned expert or a complete beginner, you’re bound to find a way to enjoy a few hours by (or on!) the water…

Bass Fishing

One of the most famous types of fishing in the Pembrokeshire area is Bass fishing. This is due to the fact that the area has a superfluity of easily accessible beaches, many of which stretch for miles and miles and provide some excellent fishing spots.

Coarse and Stillwater Fishing

Coarse and Stillwater fishing is also popular across the county, and is suitable for people of all ages and abilities, with Tench, Carp and Pike readily available to catch. If you do not have your own fishing tackle, there are plenty of places around that can hire out all of the equipment and bait that you need.

Game Fishing

The areas of Pembrokeshire that is good for game fishing are the Eastern and Western Cleddau rivers, and Teifi. It is usually the local landowners or one of the many local fishing clubs who hold the rights to fish in these areas, but many fishing clubs have day permits that are ideal for day visitors. Tuition will also be available for those people who have never fished this way before, or for those who wish to hone their skills.

Other Types of Fishing

Other fishing locations can be found in the many coves that provide a safe haven from stormy conditions for fishes and fishermen alike. The ruggedness of the Pembrokeshire coastline also provides fishing enthusiasts with excellent opportunities for sea fishing. Some of the most popular fish to be found in the area include Pollack, Bass, Conger, Bream and Mackerel. Rays and Sharks can also be found in the area.

Fishing Boat Trips

Fishing excursions are a great way to land a prize catch, and areas such as St David’s, Dale, Saundersfoot and Tenby are the best locations to find fishing boat trips. The sea around the Pembrokeshire coastline is often teeming with great varieties of fish, especially Mackerel. A fishing boat trip is also a great way to spot some of the local marine and birdlife too, with dolphins, whales, grey seals and a wide variety of sea birds in the area.

Broadside Boat Charters operate out of Dale, just a 10-minute drive from St Brides. They allow up to 12 people to charter a boat for fishing and other excursions, as well as 2- and 4-hour fishing trips off Skomer Island and St Ann’s head. Meanwhile, Blue Shark Charters operates out of St Brides (40 minutes’ drive), and offers boats for everything from two hour mackerel trips to whole days of sea fishing.

Of course, fishing is just one of the many ways to while away the hours at St Brides Castle. Walking, sporting events, historic sites and much more within easy reach of the site. Or, if you decide to stay closer to home, there’s an indoor pool, games room and 99 acres of parkland to enjoy.
