Family fun in Majorca: visit Palma’s fantastic aquarium

Posted by Luci Ackers on 8 October 2015

Palma Aquarium, which is located just a few hundred metres from Playa de Palma on the west coast of Majorca, was opened in 2007 and is home to over 700 different species from the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. There are 55 tanks and at 8.5 metres 'The Big Blue' is the deepest shark tank in Europe!

The Palma Aquarium makes a great day out. Its conservational philosophy means a lot of effort has gone into faithfully recreating the habitats and ecosystems of a whole wealth of flora and fauna from around the world. You can immerse yourself in the huge range of marine life that inhabits natural and relaxed environments in the aquarium's spectacular tanks. There are several different shark species and 'The Big Blue' is incredibly mesmerizing. If you have a PADI diver's licence you can even dive the with the sharks… if you're feeling brave.

The Palma Aquarium is a well cared for attraction, good quality and based on a site well designed both inside and out. There are a number of areas including a garden featuring Japanese pools and waterfalls and 'The Jungle' which is the largest roof garden in Spain. Guests particularly enjoy the popular touch-pool which offers the opportunity to feel starfish, sea urchins and sea cucumbers. There are feeding sessions to watch, a large outdoor play area for younger guests and special activities for children during the summer.

The aquarium is involved in a variety of conservation schemes and aims to spread awareness and admiration for the marine world. A huge collection of important coral helps to demonstrate their goals and the belief that there should be increased respect for the sea. Real, living coral decorates the tanks and the Palma Aquarium supports its own coral reproduction programme too.

There's a whole range of things to see including turtles, rays, fish and beautiful jellyfish, plus great viewing points, good displays and information boards in different languages.
