Featured in David Hamilton's book, Wild Ruins, which was published last year, Gwrych Castle is considered by the author as one of Britain's great forgotten relics. Hamilton compiled his book over the three years he was travelling the UK. First inspired while searching for mushrooms and wild foods out in the countryside, he has stumbled upon hundreds of crumbling ruins and historic sites, abandoned castles and forts that had been missed out from most tourist books. Over 250 incredible places that appear to have been lost in time are featured in Hamilton's unique book, which is the first guide book of its kind focussing solely on Britain's ruins.
Gwrych Castle is hidden close to the coast of north Wales, near to the market town of Abergele. It lies just under an hour from Henllys, and is worth discovering if you're in the area. The 19th century country house is privately owned but there are open days several times a year for visitors to view the restorative work. It makes for an imposing sight, perched into the side of a hill, and almost seems to be growing out of the landscape. It has an interesting history and was once even used as a safe place to house Jewish refugees during WWII.
Hamilton's book looks at incredible hidden wonders all over Britain and he is clearly passionate about reconnecting people with their country's rich history.
Not too far from Gwrych, and only about half an hour from Henllys is another of Hamilton's finds. Dolbadarn Castle looks as though it is being reclaimed by the land, engulfed by trees and merging seamlessly with surrounding craggy outcroppings. Built by prince Llywelyn the Great in the 13th century, what's left to be seen of this castle today is the remains of the keep and some crumbling walls. The atmospheric ruins are located on the cliffs overlooking lake Llyn Peris and enjoy the stunning backdrop of Snowdonia's iconic mountain range. It's a really beautiful place to visit if you get the chance!
