Hazelmere Café & Bakery – winner of Best Café Award for 2015

Posted by Luci Ackers on 17 June 2015

Hazelmere Café & Bakery is situated in the lovely Victorian seaside town of Grange-over-Sands which lies on Morecambe Bay. Hazelmere is a popular little stop-off for both locals and visitors to the area and gives you the choice of sitting in with a cuppa and piece of cake, or popping in to grab a crispy, freshly baked loaf for lunch-to-go.

Hazelmere is owned by Dorothy Stubley and has been for over 30 years. The building itself dates from 1897 and is grade II listed with outdoor seating that overlooks the lovely ornamental gardens. Everything is baked fresh in the in-house bakery and the café has an extensive menu that changes seasonally. Great pride is taken in the local sourcing of the majority of their ingredients, right down to the local beers and wines they serve. You can stop in for breakfast up until 11.30 and after that the main menu kicks in. Drinks and cakes are available all day, though what the café is really renowned for is the fantastic afternoon teas! If you'd rather pick something up to go, the bakery sells a wonderful selection of its yummy cakes and also an array of breads, savouries, pies and goodies all freshly baked in the traditional way.

Chutneys, jams and preserves are handmade at Hazelmere and some of the fruit used is even home grown. An innovative range of homemade frozen ready meals is really popular, particularly with holiday makers. They are fully prepared by the chefs and sold ready to just pop in the oven in single portions. Perfect for a quick and nutritious dinner.

Little Hazelmere is the company's latest venture and this is a smaller shop located on the Merlewood holiday resort. Each morning fresh bread, croissants, fantastic cakes and fruit and veg are brought across and the shop is a huge success with those staying at Merlewood. The frozen meals are a particularly popular option with the guests. There is also a good stock of general basics and newspapers so it's a great little all-rounder.

Dorothy can proudly say that The Hazelmere has won multiple awards including 'Top Tea Room in Britain' and 'Best café 2015' in the Cumbria Life Food and Drink Awards. The café specialises in exceptional teas and it is certainly worth stopping in if your are in the area.
