Can Madeira do it again?
For 2015 Madeira was voted 6th place in the Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Awards for the top 10 islands in the world. What an achievement! Can Madeira beat its score for 2016?
This charming little island in the North Atlantic ocean has a great number of things going for it. Don't miss these five which ranked highest on Tripadvisor and have earned their certificate of excellence…
Funchal
Madeira's capital city is a vibrant place with lots to see and do. There are a number of historic and cultural places to visit and a great many colourful gardens too. Make sure to pay the city a visit.
Monte Cable Car and Palace Gardens
Jump aboard the cable car at Funchal and travel the 15 minute journey of around 3,200 metres up over the city. You'll have great views over Funchal and the pretty harbour beyond. Once at the station in Monte you can alight to explore the exquisite Palace Gardens (pictured at the top).
Ponta de São Lourenço
Visit the nature reserve that is located toward the east of Madeira for wonderful views of the Atlantic and stunning rock formations. This is a beautifully untouched area of the island.
Pico Ruivo
Pico Ruivo is the highest point of the whole archipelago. The mountain top is right up in the clouds and can only be reached by foot. If it's a clear day you will be rewarded with incredible views of the island below you. The hike to the top is a tricky one and if you fancy really testing yourself, one of the most popular routes is from Pico do Arieiro, another of the island's highest mountains.
Cabo Girão
For something a little different visit Cabo Girão, one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe. Located towards the south of the island Cabo Girão is now home to an excellent glass-bottomed viewing platform and skywalk, more than 500 metres above sea level.
