Sarlat Markets in the Dordogne

Posted by Luci Ackers on 4 December 2017

Immerse yourself in the Dordogne and visit the fantastic area of Sarlat, a medieval town developed around a large abbey that is famous for its markets. The town is a network of old streets and Gothic architecture; not only is it one of the most famous areas in the Dordogne but also one of the most visited.

Located in the region of Perigord Noir, in the south west of France, the town is considered one of the most beautiful in the area. As a gastronomic centre the region is well known for the foie gras and truffles it produces (read our blog on the truffles of the Dordogne here). These sought after little fungi can often be found in the winter months at the local gourmet market which is held on Saturdays in the town centre, or at the small food market on Wednesday mornings. The markets sell all kinds of local, delicious produce, but do bear in mind that a lot of it is seasonal. Sarlat's markets are full of cheeses, meats, goose, duck, sweets and a whole lot of culture. They have been famous since the Middle Ages and still draw visitors from miles around.

Christmas Market

One of the most anticipated Sarlat events rolls around every December – the Christmas Market! For the town Christmas market, Sarlat truly pulls out all the stops. There are stalls and stalls of local food, handmade gifts, decorations, drinks and festive displays. Around 40 Chalet-style market stalls line the cobbled streets selling everything you could want for the Christmas season.

Sarlat's Christmas market kicks off in early December, usually the first or second weekend of the month, and lasts right the way through to the end of the month. There's often various activities and entertainment for both young and old to enjoy. This year, things commence on the 6th December 2017.

At just over an hour from Constant, Sarlat is a stunning town to visit, with lots of history and beautiful old streets to wander. Find out how to stay in the area by entering your details at the bottom of the page.
