The Alhambra Palace, Granada

The Alhambra Palace, Granada The Alhambra Palace, Granada A view of the Albayzín The Alhambra Palace, Granada

The largest Moorish castle in Spain and part of the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1984, Alhambra Palace is a stunning building that sits atop a hill, residing over the city of Granada.

What is it?

The magnificent structure was originally built between the early 13th and mid 14th centuries. Only the huge outer walls, towers and ramparts remain of the oldest section. The rest was rebuilt or refurbished later, during Charles V (Charles I of Spain)'s reign and again through the 19th century, meaning there is a lot of Renaissance influence throughout.

Having been originally built by the Moors as more than purely a military structure, the Alhambra, along with the Gerneralife and the Albayzín form the fine UNESCO palace-city whose three-fold purpose explains the extensive range of fascinating architectural features. The Palacio de Generalife was the 14th century summer palace and the Albayzín is the old district whose narrow streets remain today to reflect a Moorish past. It is easy to spend a day exploring each area and getting lost amongst the history. You'll be able to wander the rooms, corridors and great galleries of the palace or venture into the courtyards and gardens.

Where is it?

Granada is a city in southern Spain that is located at the foot of the stunning Sierra Nevada mountain range. The Alhambra UNESCO Site sits in a prominent position above the modern city and you can explore all the historic areas and buildings by foot.

What's there to see?

The beauty of the interiors and the architecture has been influenced, throughout the centuries, by the Nasrid Dynasty, the Christian conquest, and Philip V's Italianisation. You'll see evidence of the various influences, for example, in the inlaid cedar ceiling of the Hall of the Ambassadors, in the mesmerising dome of the Hall of the Two Sisters, and the stunning patio of Lions or Comares Tower with its stained glass windows. You'll be able to admire the plasterwork, the tiles, and the patterned intricacies of the rooms. Joining a tour would be advised to truly gain the most from your visit and you can choose between a regular or a private guided tour. For more information on these take a look at the website.

This is a place that has inspired artists, musicians, writers and poets to sing the praises of its majesty and potential for fantasy. It can get busy, so you should book tickets well in advance if you are planning a visit. Spending the day absorbing the atmosphere in this spectacular, unique citadel will undoubtedly be a day to remember. For opening times and prices check the website.

How to get there?

There is a train station in Granada and buses up to the touristy areas. The C3 bus line will take you right to the Generalife Ticket Office. Alternatively you can drive and park close to the ticket offices.
