Top 5 Historic Monuments in Majorca

Staying at Biniorella and fancy spending a day doing something a little different? Why not get out and about discovering some of Majorca's best historic sites? There's a whole wealth of history out there for you to enjoy; here are our top 5 historic monuments across the island.

1. Palma Cathedral

The construction of this magnificent building began during the rein of James I of Aragon. It sits overlooking the harbour of Palma and its exterior is certainly a sight to behold.

Inside, the main nave holds the Trinidad Chapel where the remains of King James II and King James III have been laid to rest. Among a number of beautiful features, the cathedral displays sculptures by the famous architect Guillem Sagrera and improvements that were carried out in the 20th century by none other than Antoni Gaudí. There's also an incredible rose window that throws coloured light down from high on the wall.

2.Bellver Castle

Bellver Castle is one of the few circular castles in Europe and is thought to be the oldest. It's not too far from Palma, perched on a hill and surrounded by what was once the moat. The castle was built at the beginning of the 14th century for King James II of Majorca and has suffered several sieges in its time. This two storey structure has a circular inner yard and circular towers positioned around its exterior. It's very military in appearance and was used as a prison between the 18th-20th centuries. It's now also the city's museum, so it's worth a visit.

3. Son Marroig

Son Marroig is an attractive mansion with an interesting history. It formerly belonged to an Austrian Archduke named Ludwig Salvator and dates back to the latter part of the 13th century. The museum now houses his collection of paintings, furniture and ceramics from between the 17th and 19th centuries. The property is located a short distance from the town of Deià, overlooking the sea cliffs of the north-west coast. It has beautiful gardens and you'll be able to enjoy fantastic views of the water from the pavilions.

4. The Palace of La Almudaina

The Palace of La Almudaina, just in front of the Palma Cathedral is built on the site of an old Arabian fort, and was once the home of Majorcan Royalty. The current structure reflects that of the original that was built in the 14th century; now The King and Queen's palace, St Anne's Chapel and the Arab Baths are its most important features. Its décor is a mix of medieval style on the ground floor, with works dating from the 15th century, and formal rooms upstairs.

5. Santuari de Lluc

The Monastery of Lluc, which is located towards the north of the island, is a spiritual centre and the location of the 14th century Gothic image of the island's patron saint Mare de Déu de Lluc. The site is surrounded by the Tramuntana mountains and is a pilgrimage destination that dates back to the 13th century. There is a choir school here, a botanical garden and a little museum.

Stay at Biniorella and discover all these destinations for yourself. Simply pop your details in at the bottom of the page.
