Turre is a quaint market town slightly inland from Mojácar and Garrucha on southern Spain's Mediterranean coast. This small town has a long history; what began as a prehistoric settlement has grown through the Celtic and Roman eras, leaving historic remains dotted around the town.
Following a long Moorish occupancy, the development of the town really took off in the 16th century and the Hermitage of San Francisco still remains from this time. It perches on a little hill overlooking the village. It was constructed when the last of the refugee Moors from surrounding villages converted to Christianity.
The Parish Church de la Purisima Concepcion was built in the 19th century, during which time the village experienced another boom as the mining industry took off. The Church combines a number of archaeological styles, both inside and out. It is situated among the whitewashed, flat-roofed houses of the surrounding village and you can see its Moorish-style bell tower poking above the buildings.

On Fridays Turre's market sprawls around the central town square, selling fruit, veg, flowers, textiles and a range of other goods. There is a great atmosphere, but it isn't as frantic as a lot of the larger towns near by!
