The Lake District is a beautiful setting for any trip away whether it be with the family or your significant other. However, it is worth preparing for the region’s weather as the truth is that it tends to rain quite a lot! While it sometimes may not interfere with your plans, there are fortunately lots of things to do on your visit which allow you to have fun whilst staying dry.

Explore the Lakes

The Ullswater Steamers allow you to take a relaxing and peaceful journey across one of the most beautiful lakes you will come across. Enjoy the steam boat cruise come rain or shine. It runs 363 days of the year and can connect you to some of the great walking routes around the Lake District National Park should you fancy a walk on a nicer day. Five different boats cross the lake Ullswater so you can be surprised by the one which operates on your chosen day!

Enjoy a trip to the coast, no matter the weather

There is also the Coast Aquarium that is fun for all the family! Set on the coast near Maryport Harbour there is a large selection of fish and aquatic animals to discover. Once you’re done with the animals you can let the children play on the adventure playground whilst you relax in the on-site café. There is also a mini-golf course and gift shop to finish off your day.

Discover some history...

Muncaster Castle is a historic haunted castle with beautiful gardens and an owl centre. Take a tour around the castle and learn about the history. You can hear the haunted tales and even ghost-hunt yourself! If the weather isn’t great you can head over to the owl centre. Here you’ll find hawks, falcons, eagles, and other birds of prey. Check out the times for the live displays as you’ll be able to see these beautiful creatures in flight – perfect for the kids!

... Or the local culture

The Laurel and Hardy Museum in Cumbria is great fun for everyone. What started off as a small collection of photos has now grown into a full-blown cinema of Laurel and Hardy memorabilia, telling the tale of their lives and rise to fame. See clips from the famous duo, find out facts you didn’t know and purchase novelty gifts for your friends and family.

Meet the locals

Lakeland Wildlife Oasis is an indoor and outdoor zoo with lots of fun animals to see. There is a butterfly hall, aquarium, amphibians, reptiles, birds, rodents and exotic animals such as snow leopards! You can view the beautiful plant life also on display with bright and bold flowers that attract butterflies. The Oasis even offers zoo keeper experiences for a great price! Get hands on with all of the animals, groom them and feed them. Perfect for kids or for a surprise!

Discover all the charms of Cumbria - no matter the weather!
