More about Henllys

Located just a mile from the town of Beaumaris, on the beautiful Welsh island of Anglesey, is historic Henllys – formerly a Franciscan Friary, now converted into comfortable, stylish cottages and apartments.

Henllys, together with its county-standard 18-hole Golf Course, commands 150 acres of hillside parkland, overlooking Beaumaris Castle, the Menai Strait and, beyond, the spectacular mountain ranges of Snowdonia.

The island of Anglesey (Ynys Môn) covers 276 square miles and is separated from the Welsh mainland by the Menai Strait. Anglesey is rich in history and unrivalled in the diversity of its wildlife habitats – from the great sea cliffs, estuaries, lagoons and dunes along its 125 miles of spectacular coastline (95 per cent of which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), to the lakes, wetlands, heaths and rich farmland of the interior.

If you love to spend your holidays by the seaside, you’re going to have a hard time choosing which beaches out of the 46 to visit. Twenty-six of them have won seaside beach awards, six boast Blue Flags and 14 have Green Flags.

Grab the binoculars and go bird watching

There are thousands of sea birds to be seen at South Stack Cliffs. Kittiwakes, razorbills and guillemots call the cracks in the cliffs home, and can be seen raising their young during the spring and summer. If you’re lucky, you may even get to see puffins and rare choughs.

Experience a taste of Italy at Portmeirion

More than 225,000 people visit Portmeirion every year, and it’s easy to see why. It’s a fascinating, colourful, Italian-style village, located on the southern shores of Snowdonia. It was designed by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis and consists of 50 buildings, all painted in different colours, and 70 acres of sub-tropical woodland gardens. You many recognise it from the TV show The Prisoner.

Breathe in Anglesey’s fascinating culture

If you fancy learning more about Anglesey, visit the Oriel Ynys Môn, which has information on the area’s Stone Age burial chambers and its incredible medieval castles. Prefer art to history? Check out the gallery part of the museum, where works from both new and established artists are on display.

For a fun day out with all the family, we recommend Plas Newydd Country House and Gardens. Set on the shores of the Menai Strait, you’ll adore the views of Snowdonia here.

Take the kids somewhere special

All chocolate-loving kids will be in heaven at Foel Farm and Chocolate Factory. Not only can your kids see the expert chocolatier at work (and try the results in the shop), they can also feed the animals and take a tour around the real working farm on a tractor.

Best of all, once you’ve paid the entry fee, all the rides are free!

Shops and restaurants

The golf clubhouse also has a bar and provides all-day meals. A wide selection of shops, restaurants and pubs is on offer in Beaumaris, just one mile away.

On-site facilities

On the lower ground floor there is a licensed bistro, which is operated by a franchisee. It is open Wednesday to Saturday evenings and for Sunday lunch.

The indoor heated swimming pool has wonderful views across the golf course and the Menai Strait. There’s also a sauna, steam room, small exercise room and a central washing/drying facility.

Within the grounds, there are three tennis courts, an all-weather bowling green, an observation lawn with chess and, of course, the 18-hole golf course that encircles the site, woodlands with well-kept paths for walking.

Henllys Golf Course

Henllys Golf Club is supported by club members, but holidaymakers staying on-site receive generous discounts for daily or weekly memberships.

The on-site pro shop offers coaching and a selection of accessories. The golf clubhouse also has a bar and provides meals all day.

Twenty-six period apartments within an historic hall. A further 67 units overlooking an on-site Championship-standard golf course and, beyond, Beaumaris, the eponymous Castle, the glittering Menai Strait and the magnificent mountains of Snowdonia.

On fine days there’s simply no better view – and nowhere better to be. And, if the weather turns a tad inclement – as it can – hunker down with a cuppa and a nice bit of toasted bara brith, and wait for it to turn again. It will, ere long.

For golfer and non-golfer alike, Henllys is a slice of North Welsh heaven.

Properties in Anglesey

Cottages

The 53 cottages of Henllys are situated in the grounds of the elegant main mansion building, surrounded by the peaceful greens and fairways of the Henllys Golf Club in the heart of the Welsh countryside.

Apartments

All apartments are single storey and are on a slightly smaller scale to the cottages but still perfectly roomy, accepting anywhere between two to six guests, depending on the property size. All are either one or two-bedroom and there is one three-bedroom unit.

Studios

A handful of studios complete the site. These are much more compact and can comfortably sleep two guests, located in the main mansion building.

You can’t truly experience the beauty of Henllys until you’ve visited yourself, but the photos below should go some way towards illustrating how stunning the place truly is. The views from the former friary will blow you away – who would ever get sick of seeing those mountains every morning? If that doesn’t inspire you to get out there and explore Snowdonia, we don’t know what will.

Inside, Henllys looks just as grand. Enjoy a relaxing swim in our heated indoor swimming pool, which boasts its own incredible views or, when the sun is out, play a few games of tennis on the site’s own courts. At the end of every day, you get to tuck yourself up in one of our stunning four-poster beds. You won’t ever want to go home.

The Isle of Anglesey nestles on the north-west corner of Wales.

It is separated from the mainland by the Menai Strait, spanned by the Menai Bridge and the Britannia Bridge.

95% of Anglesey’s 125 miles of spectacular coastline have been designated as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and with a backdrop of the mountains of Snowdonia, and 46 beaches of which six are blue flag, 14 are green flag and 26 have won seaside beach awards, Henllys makes for a stunning destination.

Nearby is the formidable Beaumaris Castle, which was begun in 1295 but left unfinished. The last and largest of King Edward I’s Welsh fortifications is now a World Heritage Site, and is a perfect example of a concentrically planned castle.

National Trust property Plas Newydd Country House and Gardens is the home of the Marquess of Anglesey. With spectacular views of Snowdonia, it’s one of the UK’s finest mansion house settings. Enjoy the largest collection of Rex Whistler works, followed by a woodland walk.

Things to do in Anglesey

Regional wildlife and local tongue twisters

Anglesey Sea Zoo is Wales’ largest marine aquarium, located on the shore of the Menai Strait. A great all-weather day out, the zoo carefully recreates the habitats of over 150 species found around Anglesey and the North Wales coastline.

If you arrive by train, you could arrange by appointment only to disembark at Llanfairpwllgwyngyll-gogerychwyrndrobwll-llantysilio-gogogoch, which is the village with the longest name in the Britain.

Explore North Wales' historical treasures

A short drive over the Menai Strait takes you into mainland North Wales and a veritable host of beautifully preserved historical properties.

Another National Trust gem is Penrhyn Castle near Bangor, which is a 19th-century ‘fantasy castle’ with notable furniture and art collections, as well as a Victorian walled garden and kitchens, museums and an adventure playground.

Heading east along the coast to Conwy, the Plas Mawr Elizabethan Town House, built by Robert Wynn between 1576 and 1585 and almost entirely restored, is one of the best of its kind in the UK.

Also a World Heritage Site and built for King Edward I, Conwy Castle is perched upon a narrow rocky outcrop that perhaps influenced its distinctive shape. Constructed between 1283-87, it is an ‘outstanding achievement of medieval military architecture’.

The National Trust’s Bodnant Garden consists of two parts and is one of the most beautiful gardens in the UK. Covering 80 acres, it’s situated above the River Conwy and looks west across the valley towards Snowdonia.

Built by royalty and Romans

Caernarfon, a short drive south west, is most famous for its 13th-century castle. It was built by King Edward I to be a royal residence and seat of government. His son, the first English Prince of Wales, was born at Caernarfon Castle in 1284. It was also the setting for HRH Prince Charles’ investiture as Prince of Wales in 1969.

The Segontium Fort, which dates back to 77 AD, is one of the most well-known Roman sites in Britain. Records show that it held a regiment of up to 1,000 soldiers until about 394 AD. The fort was strategic, controlling access to Anglesey and protecting the Welsh coast from Irish raiders.

Snowdonia, steam trains and stone keeps

The beautiful and awe-inspiring Snowdonia National Park, with its magnificent scenery and walking opportunities, is a stone’s throw from Henllys. And if you still want to enjoy the views but would prefer an easier way to the 3,560ft-high summit of Snowdon, why not take the Snowdon Mountain Railway?

Or enjoy stunning views of Snowdon from a lower level with the Llanberis Lake Railway and its narrow-gauge steam trains. Journey from Gilfach Ddu to Penllyn, passing 13th-century Dolbadarn Castle and Llanberis’ twin lakes. The train runs through the Padarn Country Park, joining the 1845 slate railway route that follows the shores of Lake Padarn.

Dolwyddelan Castle in the heart of Snowdonia was remodelled by King Edward. It was originally built by Llywelyn ab Iorwerth (‘the Great’) in the 13th century, and only a square stone keep remains now.

Travelling south through Snowdonia (to where the Llŷn Peninsula juts out from north Wales), you reach Portmeirion village and gardens. Created by visionary Welsh architect Clough Williams-Ellis in the 1960s, it became the setting for the cult television series ‘The Prisoner’.

GreenWood Forest Park

A must for all families situated in a wooded valley in Snowdonia this wonderful Adventure Park promises you fun family days out whatever the weather.

Brave GreenWood’s famous Green Dragon Roller coaster, the first and the only one of its kind in the world. This eco-coaster uses people power to make it work and it generates more electricity than it uses in a single year.

All the fabulous rides and activities at GreenWood have been designed for fun and adventure with a difference and the best thing is: they are all eco-friendly! Check out the Green Page www.greenwoodforestpark.co.uk to find out what GreenWood has done to keep its Carbon Footprint down and see what wildlife projects they have planned.

Glasfryn Activity Centre

Situated in Pwllheli about one hour’s drive from Henllys, this activity centre is great for all the family. Enjoy a range of activities including Ten Pin Bowling, Go-Karting, Quad Trekking, Junior Quad Biking and Archery.

“Pass it on”

There are two things that characterise our family. We’re quite outdoorsy; and we love to do things together. And Henllys ticked both boxes: the location is spectacular, the grounds and woodland surrounding the site enabled us to connect with nature (we couldn’t believe how many red squirrels we saw on the Woodland Walk), and we really enjoyed each other’s company on family days out, to places like Snowdonia. The onsite facilities are great, too. The kids tried their hands at golf on Henllys’s 18-hole County-standard course. And we all enjoyed the games room and the indoor swimming pool.
