Discover Perthshire

Witch’s Pool is situated on the banks of the River Ericht in the Perthshire town of Blairgowrie. Renowned for its fishing, Witch’s pool also benefits from being just a short drive from Balmoral as well as the historic town of Dunkeld, home of the famous Birnam Oak as featured in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Along with fishing, other outdoor pursuits are catered for at the nearby Glen Shee, ideal for walking in the summer and skiing in the winter.

Shops and restaurants

The lodges at Witch’s Pool are mere minutes from Blairgowrie, one of the largest towns in Perthshire, where you’ll find a range of shops, restaurants and bars.

The town of Rattray is across the river and you are also equidistant from Perth and Dundee, both large cities approximately half an hour’s drive away.

On-site facilities

The ghillie’s bothy sits between the upper lodges and has a log burning stove and drying room. Please note that the site is accommodation only, there are no further Bond leisure facilities available, and due to its remote location, a vehicle is required.

Perthshire is a large county in Scotland and features fantastic scenery from a wide variety of landscapes, including beautiful highland, lochs, glens and lush forests.

At its centre, Blairgowrie is one of the county’s largest towns and acts as a gateway to Glenshee – or fairy glenn – which is home to the UK’s most extensive skiing facilities, but also offers other year-round sports.

Where it sits in the heart of Perthshire, Blairgowrie is right on the banks of The River Ericht, which is part of the Tay river system and enjoys rich salmon runs from May to mid October. You are also in the perfect location to explore some of the attractions which highlight the rich history of the surrounding the area.

Things to do in Perthshire

Perthshire is a stunning destination for lovers of the outdoors, boasting scenery ranging from high mountains to low glens and from thick forests to crashing waterfalls. A walk through the beautiful countryside is sure to impress at any time of year.

This fantastic destination for fishing fanatics, with the salmon beat covering 1½ miles of river, provides double-bank and mid-stream fishing – for old hands and novices alike. But more than that, this Blairgowrie location is also a great base for exploring a whole host of other Scottish wonders in the beautiful surroundings.

A Slice of History

Scotland’s fascinating history fills the landscape with castles and ancient civilisations too good to miss. From Blairgowrie both Lochleven and Edzell castle are roughly 50 minutes away. Lochleven, the oldest of the two, is thought to date from as early at the 14th century and housed Mary Queen of Scots while she was prisoner to Sir William Douglas.

Also nearby, the ruinous Arbroath Abbey is located towards the coast, and Stanley Millls, the water powered cotton mills, sit on the banks of the River Tay. Here visitors can explore one of the best-preserved relics of the 18th century Industrial Revolution and learn about the textile industry that brought the buildings to fame. Another 50 miles south of there is a section of the Atonine Wall – the north-west frontier of the Roman Empire. This 8km stretch of 2,000 year old earthworks is included as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Local Sights

Dunkeld Cathedral is another favourite. It has been receiving visitors since Celtic monks established their base here in the 9th century, but has seen many changes since then. Though the cathedral is used for regular worship, and the choir is roofed, a large portion stands in elegant 14th century ruins, and is preserved as an Ancient Monument.

Close to the southern edge of Cairngorms, the largest National Park in the UK, you are within easy reach of some fantastic Scottish Highland landscape. Stunning walking country and a huge variety of wildlife and scenery will greet you here. Explore the mountains, valleys and flat moorland, or take to the waters on one of the many lochs and rivers.

Not Enough?

You can really get your heart racing in one of the many activity experiences on offer. Perthshire is great for an adventurous day out with Nae Limits extreme sports, Strathbraan based Scottish Quads, Gulabin Lodge Outdoor Centre, and the Glenshee Ski Centre in the Caingorms!

What people like you say about HPB

“The holiday of a lifetime – or a lifetime of holidays? We’re glad we chose the latter!”

A little while ago, Norman and Liz Wright faced the nicest of dilemmas. “We had a bit of a financial windfall,” says Norman, “and were wondering what to do with it. “The money was enough to pay for a one-off, once-in-a-lifetime holiday – and I won’t deny, we thought about it. But we were aware of the Holiday Property Bond; some close friends of ours had invested many years ago, and had nothing but good things to say about HPB”…  Liz and Norman became Bondholders in May 2017, and took their first HPB holiday the following October – to Tigh Mor Trossachs, the Bond’s Perthshire home, and a jewel in the HPB crown.

“I think we chose well,” laughs Liz. “What a place! That amazing, turreted edifice, looking like a fairytale castle, and its location, just take your breath away.”
