Discover Almeria

Set amid rolling hills against a dramatic Cabrera mountain backdrop, El Pueblito de Alfaix was developed by an award-winning local architect to resemble an authentic Andalucian village. As a result, this delightful private resort retains a relaxed rural feel, with its Moorish-style whitewashed villas and apartments linked by attractive walkways lined with dry stone walls. Its beautifully landscaped grounds blend seamlessly into its undisturbed pastoral surroundings.

The towns and villages around El Pueblito have something for everyone – from those seeking a relaxing break by the sea, to more active holidaymakers interested in diving, swimming, tennis, sailing, cycling, fishing, riding, wind-surfing, water skiing, mountain biking and more.

Of course you won’t want to spend your entire time in the resort, you’ll be eager to explore the rest of the Almeria coast. Its landscape is striking, but that’s not all it has to offer – from stunning sandy beaches to famous film sets and a fascinating history, Almeria has it all. It also boasts the highest number of daylight hours of any location in Europe, so you’ll have plenty of time each day to get out there and see as much as possible.

Be sure to visit Almeria City, where an impressive Arab fortress, known as Alcazaba, overlooks the buildings below.

Appreciate the Moorish architecture

There are several Moorish palaces in Almeria. The aforementioned Alcazaba is one of them, but the Alhambra, or red fortress, is the most notable. In fact, it’s considered to be the most important piece of Moorish architecture in all of Spain, so visiting it is a must. The Alhambra is impressive both inside and out; the last and arguably greatest example of Moorish art was created within the palace, which was once home to Andalusia’s Moorish rulers between the 13th and 15th centuries

Hit the beach and soak up the sun

The majority of Almeria’s 100kms of beautiful coastline are part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and are therefore unspoilt. When you combine these surprisingly quiet beaches with the glorious weather, you have the ideal holiday destination. Almeria has the driest and sunniest climate in Spain. Visit anytime between early spring and late autumn to enjoy perfect sunbathing conditions.

Visit the sets of your favourite films

Tabernas is the only true desert in Europe and the home of many film sets as a result. Classics such as Indiana Jones, Doctor Zhivago, Lawrence of Arabia and Cleopatra were shot here, as were many spaghetti westerns. Some of the sets still remain, and can be visited for a fee.

See the famous troglodyte villages

You’ll need to travel inland to visit the troglodyte villages, where modern-day cave dwellers have carved homes within the soft rock. Called casas cuevas, these homes provide protection from the heat, so although you won’t be able to see inside them, the doors, windows and chimneys are all visible from the outside. It’s an amazing and unusual sight to behold.

Shops and restaurants

In addition to the clubhouse restaurant and bar, there is an independent mini market at the entrance to the site.

Although the village of Alfaix itself has no commercial centre, nearby Turre has a wide selection of shops, supermarkets, bars and restaurants – many offering delicious regional fare at remarkably attractive prices.

A little further afield, Garrucha is highly regarded for the variety and quality of its many restaurants. Mojacar’s Parque Commerciale has a range of international restaurants – and a wealth of shops – to meet all tastes and preferences.

On-site amenities

Within the clubhouse, there is a magnificent swimming pool. During the summer months, the roof above the pool is open to the summer sunshine and during the winter it is covered and the pool heated.

Adjoining the clubhouse is a large outdoor pool with surrounding sun terraces.

Visitors will also benefit from a Jacuzzi and steam room, two paddle tennis courts, crazy golf, a bowls club and two full size tennis courts.

The nearest golf course is within 15 minutes of Alfaix, at Los Pastores (where you will also find a bar, restaurant, swimming pool and tennis court).

One hundred and five studios, apartments and villas make up El Pueblito de Alfaix, a village that, if you didn’t know better, you’d swear had been there for centuries.

Peel an orange from the nearby orange groves. Wallow in the warmth of southern Spain. Feel yourself relax as you adapt to a slower, Spanish rhythm. Enjoy breakfast on the patio with the children, before they rush off for another fun-filled day at the Activity Club.

And after you’ve walked a bit, swum a bit, read a bit and – who knows? – dozed a bit, head to the bar for something cool, and watch the Sierra Cabrera mountains turn pink in the light of the setting sun, before you head down to the river-bed to hear the nightingales sing.

Properties in Almeria

Apartments

Of the 105 properties at the Almerían site of Alfaix, the majority are apartments. These are a range of properties of either one or two bedrooms that have the capacity for anywhere between two and five guests, depending on the size of the property. The majority of apartments are single-storey and provide a great base for couples or small families.

Studios

Sleeping just two guests, the Alfaix studios are the smallest option for accommodation, but are still perfectly well equipped with all you will need during your stay. These open-plan properties are ideal for couples looking to explore the wonders of Almería.

Villas

The Alfaix villas are the height of luxury and lacking in nothing. These are the largest properties on site and range in size from three, four or five bedrooms. They are perfect for getting a large group of you together, whether it be friends or family, a special occasion or a relaxing get-away in the sun. The villas are sleek, modern and equipped with everything you need.

The Almeria Coast could not be prettier if it tried. It is cradled between the dramatic mountain range and the shimmering sea.

There are many characteristics of this area; its wildlife and history; its landscapes and beaches; its film sets and sceneries. Also its pure intense light gives Almeria arguably the highest number of daylight hours in Europe.

Almeria City, holds a great deal of charm and is steeped in history. It is located at the foot of a mountain range which is crowned by the magnificent Alcazaba, an Arab fortress with three huge walled enclosures.

With over 50kms of glorious coastline – scattered with bars, restaurants and secure playgrounds for children – the area’s beaches consistently achieve the European Blue Flag award for their cleanliness.

They are renowned for the diversity of their water sports including jet skiing, paragliding, canoeing, water skiing, sailing, windsurfing and scuba diving. Inevitably, the coastal resorts can be quite busy in summer, but visitors preferring to ‘get away from it all’ can find many uncrowded sandy beaches, and attractive undiscovered coves, off the beaten track.

Things to do in Almeria

Garrucha

Nearby Garrucha, a traditional Spanish fishing town, is generally regarded as the seafood capital of the Costa. And it is home to some of the region’s finest restaurants.

The focal point of the town is its working fishing port and marina where – each morning at dawn – the boats set out to sea, returning around 5pm, laden with fish.

Cabo de Gata Natural Park

The Cabo de Gata Natural Park is a firm favourite with walkers and naturalists – especially birdwatchers. Inland, you may spot Bonelli’s eagles, crested larks and black wheatears. Along the coast, seabirds such as gannets, puffins and razorbills are relatively common, as are storks, avocets and even flamingos.

Mini Hollywood

For the young (and the young at heart), there’s Mini Hollywood, a theme park built around an old spaghetti-western film set where legendary movies such as A Fistful of Dollars, The Good the Bad and the Ugly and For a Few Dollars More were shot.

Granada

At Granada – a couple of hours distant – you will find the Alhambra Palace and fortress of the city’s former Moorish rulers, where you can easily spend a full day admiring the fine Islamic architecture.

What people like you say about HPB

“With retirement on the horizon, we wanted somewhere to escape to, especially in the winter”

“The Representative who came to see us was helpful, informative and more importantly she wasn’t pushy,” continues Sheila. “She said that if, after our first holiday, we felt HPB wasn’t for us we could get back the full amount we invested. As it happened our first HPB holiday at Santa Rosa on Lanzarote, followed by a week with two twenty-something sons at Biniorella on Majorca, confirmed that HPB was definitely right for us. It ticked all the boxes!”
