Discover Carvoeiro

More about Rocha Brava
Situated approximately three miles from the seaside town of Carvoeiro, in the centre of the Algarve, Rocha Brava is a large development of fine villas and apartments which benefit from a raft of facilities and amenities.

Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, and only 3km from the enchanting old fishing village of Praia do Carvoeiro, Rocha Brava is a haven of beauty and tranquillity. Here you can discover what the heart of the Algarve has to offer, including the numerous silver beaches that are close at hand and some of the best golf courses in the Algarve.

Nearby, the ancient Moorish capital of Silves boasts a fine historic castle. Further north, the Monchique mountains offer a panoramic view of the Algarve on a clear day.

Play golf on world-class courses
Golfers will be delighted at the choice of courses in the vicinity, as the Algarve is repeatedly named as the world’s best golfing destination. Even if you’ve never picked up a 9-iron before, there are plenty of places you can learn to play the game too. Experienced golfers, meanwhile, will feel right at home on the many first-class Championship courses.

Have fun with the family

If you’re bringing the kids along with you to Rocha Brava, there are plenty of fun family attractions to keep them happy. Slide & Splash is regarded as one of Europe’s best water parks and it has rides to suit all ages. Zoomarine is another attraction popular with families. The kids will love the dolphin shows, pirate-themed performances and, of course, the waterpark. It’s well worth a visit.

Hit the beaches

With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, you can’t come to the Algarve without enjoying the incredibly clean and beautiful beaches. There’s more than 200km of coastline to explore, so you’re spoilt for choice. If you’re looking for somewhere a little more private, there are plenty of coves here too.

Take a boat trip

One of the best ways to get to the top beaches and coves is by boat, so why not take a pleasure trip from Portimão? You can swim from the boat and go snorkelling or simply sunbathe on the deck. Keen fishers can take trips catering especially for them. Big game fishing trips are available for beginners and more experienced anglers – why not give it a go? You may end up bringing home some dinner.

Shop until you drop

The shopping centres in the Algarve aren’t to be missed – though it would be hard to, as they’re open every day until midnight! You can treat yourself, or friends and relatives back home, to a range of locally made products, including decorated tiles, pottery, crystal, jewellery, embroidered tablecloths and cork products. The local markets are worth a visit too; you’ll find everything you could possibly want there, from cheap clothes to fresh fruit and vegetables.

Long-stay holidays

We offer concessionary long-stay holiday specials for those who wish to stay at Rocha Brava for more than a week. Please read our brochure or get in touch with us for more details.

Shops and restaurants

Carvoeiro is the nearest village, around three miles away. Here you will find restaurants, shops, a fruit and vegetable market, bars and a discotheque.

The bigger fishing town of Portimao, 15 miles away, has a large hypermarket and shopping centre.

Many fine eateries are within walking distance. On the doorstep, the on-site restaurant of O Farol is good, open 7 days a week.

Nearby Julio’s on the other hand, is set back from the main road, and offers comfortable seating both inside and out. The food, a mix of international cuisine and Portuguese specialities, is superb and realistically priced; the service friendly without being obsequious.

On-site facilities

The clubhouse at Rocha Brava offers:

  • a pool table
  • lounge and kitchen
  • showers
  • luggage store
  • DVD library
  • reception
  • free internet with Wi-Fi access

There’s a private swimming pool (which is covered and heated between October and June, depending on the weather), a children’s outside play area, a barbecue and a pétanque court.

The development also has:

  • a further four swimming pools
  • four pay-as-you-play hard tennis courts (with a resident coach)
  • a fitness centre
  • a restaurant, coffee shop and supermarket

We have 53 holiday homes at Rocha Brava – a sizeable estate, but rather dwarfed in view of the fact that Rocha Brava as a whole boasts in excess of 400 units. This confers huge advantages; while we offer our holidaymakers the use of two outdoor swimming pools, a clubhouse, games room and so on – all the things you’d expect on a 50-unit site – the sheer size of the Rocha Brava village resort means guests have access to all sorts of other facilities – a further three swimming pools, a café, an à-la-carte restaurant, a well-stocked supermarket, tennis courts, gym facilities and more – all without leaving the site.

Properties in Carvoeiro

Apartments

There are 36 apartments available to you at Rocha Brava, either one or two-bedroom properties. Depending on the size they can sleep between two and four people and, within walking distance of Portugal’s south coast, they provide a great base from which to explore the area.

Villas

The site also features 17 two and three-bedroom villas, most of which are terraced properties. The villas sleep anywhere between four and seven guests depending on property size. These properties are certainly the choice for larger groups wishing to enjoy some relaxation time in the Algarve.

The Algarve is on the south-west tip of Europe. Here you can find the finest beaches and weather in Portugal.

Everywhere you go you are surrounded by bright colours, crystal clear waters, golden sands, blue skies, verdant grass and beautiful white-washed buildings.

The coastline includes some of Europe’s most magnificent beaches and inland you can soak up the heritage and history of Portugal in the quaint villages. Traces of the Moorish presence are still in evidence in the local architecture.

Things to do in Carvoeiro

Though the site itself has lots of quiet corners in which to soak up the sun in relative privacy, it is the beaches for which the Algarve is renowned.

Centianes in particular is a delight – safe, peaceful and just a ten-minute walk away.

Water-based fun for all the family

Nearby Zoomarine is a fun and informative day out, where the whole family can experience (and interact with) dolphins, seals and turtles – as well as sharks, crocodiles, alligators and tropical fish – in a reasonable facsimile of their native environment.

The park aims to ‘promote environmental knowledge, preservation and education in a fun and exciting way’. It’s also home to a variety of birds of prey, animals and exhibits, with a daily falconry demonstration and tropical bird show.

Inevitably, the resident bottlenose dolphins are the greatest crowd pleasers, displaying their immense intelligence and acrobatic prowess to packed audiences throughout the day.

Arguably the most popular family attraction on the Algarve is Slide and Splash, the largest of the area’s many water parks. Situated roughly 5km from Rocha Brava, the park has chutes and slides, waves and rides aplenty.

Something for your adventurous side

To see a different side of the Algarve, why not explore the scenic countryside by going off the beaten track with a quad bike trek? Quad Ventura takes riders of all ages and levels of experience across terrains that are demanding on foot and impossible by car.

Alternatively, step off the land and view the beautiful Portuguese coastline from the sea. Alvor-based Trigana Sailing Adventures will take you out in a traditional Portuguese sailing ship to peer into sea caves and to discover the shore and marine life first hand by snorkelling.

A historical treasure trove

For the amateur historian, the Algarve is a veritable treasure chest of historical gems, influenced by the many civilisations that have passed through the area, from the Romans to the Moors.

Take a trip back in time with discovery tours from Mouriscas Tours or explore the mosaics and other artefacts at the Museu Municipal Dr. Jose Formosinho in Lagos.

If you’re exploring Albufeira on foot, look out for the statue of San Vicente, a saint from the town who set out to spread the Catholic religion in South America but was finally executed in Japan for his beliefs.

Should your interests lie in fortifications, the castles at Alcoutim and Loulé both have their own archaeological museums. Sagres fortress, a National Monument, has also played an important role in the history of the area, as documented in the visitors’ centre.

Walks around Rocha Brava

These walks from the Holiday Property Bond clubhouse at Rocha Brava, have been collected and walked by Bondholders over the last fifteen years.

They are all within a small radius and where motoring to the start is required this will be no more than an hours drive and mostly a lot less. An Algarve road map will give an indication of the distances involved. Walking times and distances have not been given apart from a few at the beginning. Two to three hours is normally ample time but please remember that these are rambles to admire the views and not route marches.

“Rons Rambles” are a well established weekly winter event (sometimes led by other Bondholders) and have to be stopped occasionally for the “walking cocktail party” to use their eyes!

Regular walkers will know that sensible walking shoes, a hat, a drink, a snack, wet weather gear and sometimes long trousers (to avoid scratched legs through undergrowth) are advisable. Telescopic walking poles are very popular these days and certainly help on the rugged rocks of cliff top walks.

Most of the walks have points of interest and many have spectacular views. It is nice to go in groups and if there are Bondholders who can lead these or similar walks please inform the office at Casa Bonina and put a notice on the board.

Newcomers to Rocha Brava will find that some of these walks will take them to places not so easy to find on a short stay, but please remember that all walks are at the walker’s own risk and neither a leader nor HPB can be held responsible for any accidents.

Happy walking!

These walks are available from the information room at Casa Bonina.

“A world away from package holidays”

We’re not what you might call ‘hobby’ people. We’re not particularly keen walkers, or avid birdwatchers. But we just love to see the world. And the Holiday Property Bond makes it possible.
