Discover Salzburgerland

With its spectacular mountains and lakes, picturesque towns and welcoming villages, Austria is a country of inspiring natural beauty. And Viehhofen, in the region of Salzburgerland, is home to winter skiing and summer walking to rival any in the Alps. This is where you can find a development of one and two-bedroom apartments which are the perfect retreat after a day’s skiing or walking.

The winter sports region served by Zell am See and Kaprun offers a wealth of opportunities for skiers of all abilities. The Kitzsteinhorn glacier above Kaprun is predominantly an area for beginners and intermediates, while the Schmittenhöhe above Zell has plenty of pistes to keep novices happy, alongside some longish black runs for the advanced skier. There’s a snowboard park in Zell and a half-pipe on the Kitzsteinhorn, and the presence of snowboarders making use of the snowfields of the Kitzsteinhorn in the summer months helps to keep Zell’s nightlife buzzing all year round.

The season on the Schmittenhöhe runs from early December to mid-April, while the Kitzsteinhorn is skiable for all but the hottest summer months.

The range of summer activities on offer includes windsurfing and sailing on the lake, as well as white-water rafting in the Taxenbach Gorge, 20km to the east of town.

Ski and snowboard to your heart’s content

Austria is one of the best ski and snowboard destinations in the world, so it’s no surprise it’s a firm favourite with British travellers. Each and every resort is of an extremely high quality in terms of facilities and service, and all possess buckets of traditional Austrian charm.

With such a huge choice of resorts, you’re bound to find some which cater to your level of ski or snowboard expertise.

Visit the charming town of Zell am See

You can’t holiday in Austria without visiting at least one of its many beautiful towns and villages. The lakeside Zell am See is not only picturesque, it boasts a fantastic range of shops, cafes and bars. Plus, the centre is traffic-free, which is great news for those with small children.

Zell am See is full of history, too. Its cobbled street dates back to the 13th century, and there are plenty of medieval buildings to admire.

Celebrate Bauernherbst with the locals

Bauernherbst is an autumn festival celebrated over the harvest time. It’s a big tourist attraction, and usually consists of various markets selling cheese, crafts and various farmer produce. You’re also likely to see a marching band or two! People of all ages will love this celebration, so don’t miss it.

See Mozart’s childhood home in Salzburg

Austria’s capital is a must-visit of course, but another key attraction to see is Mozart’s birthplace, which is now a museum. Stiftung Mozarteum is located in the very centre of Salzburg, and has various exhibits, including the violin Mozart played as a child, his concert violin and harpsichord.

Enjoy a Sound of Music tour

Sound of Music fans will be pleased to know they can visit the film’s famous shooting locations via a daily tour. Even those who have no interest in the film will love seeing Austria’s beautiful countryside. The tour passes through Leopoldskron and Hellbrunn Castles, Mirabell Gardens, Lake Wolfgang, the wedding church in Mondee and Nonnberg Abbey, among other shooting locations.

Concessionary long stay holidays

If you wish to stay at Viehhofen longer than a week during the off-peak period, you may do so. Please refer to the brochure or get in touch with us for more information.

Viehhofen (859m) is a typical small Austrian village, with supermarket, drinks store, bank, tourist information centre, internet café, restaurants, post office, ski-hire shop, ski school, walks and hiking trails. There is a ski-bus (free when you buy a ski pass) to Saalbach and a post-bus hourly to Saalbach and Zell-am-See. The bus stop is three minutes’ walk from the chalet.

There are many supermarkets in the area. The Landal reception office near Sport Oberlader has a small Internet café. The Dorfstadl restaurant is nearby.

Out of season, April (after Easter) to early May, and late October to early December, many local tourist and eating facilities are closed. Please note that the chalets are a mile from the centre of Viehhofen. Cars cannot always reach them in winter and may have to be parked up to 70 metres away (unless you have adequate chains, studded tyres and/or 4 wheel drive).

Superb skiing in winter, wonderful walking in summer: Austria has it all. And our Viehhofen holiday homes put you right in the middle of it. At Viehhofen, you’ll find levels of comfort, furnishings and equipment to surpass expectations: just the thing to get you ready for a hard day on the pistes or mountain trails; or to ease tired limbs afterwards. A lovely day in the fresh air, a shower, a glass of wine, dinner… and perhaps a DVD from our on-site library… You really think you’re going to stay awake?!?

Viehhofen is a village in the Pingzau region of Salzburg. It is situated in the Glemmtal valley and is particularly well located for excellent skiing and walking.

The immediate area includes Saalbach, Hinterglemm, Zell-Am-See and Kaprun. These four locations offer up to 330kms of maintained slopes.

The Kitzsteinhorn glacier affords skiing all year round. As many of the cable cars and lifts also operate throughout the year, it is an ideal location for mountain walking.

Things to do in Viehhofen

Viehhofen is a romantic little village set between the popular skiing regions of Zell-am-See-Kaprun and Saalbach-Hinterglemm in the Glemmtal valley.

It’s an ideal location from which to explore the surrounding area and to enjoy activities ranging from mountain walking to cycling.

Skiing on your doorstep

Saalbach-Hinterglemm is only a 10 minute drive west, with the highest skiing at 2,102m. With 120km of marked runs, there’s excellent skiing for beginners and intermediates, as well as a number of good routes for experts.

It has the best ski school in Austria, a good late season snow record, and lively après ski and nightlife. There’s also a range of other activities, from skating and ice hockey to riding and hiking.

Alternatively, head 10 minutes south east of Viehhofen to the Zell-am-See-Kaprun region, which has 138km of pistes. It offers plenty of other activities too, including cross-country skiing, sledging and hiking.

Zell-am-See is one of Austria’s most popular family-friendly destinations. Its highest skiing is at 2,000m, with excellent routes for beginners and intermediates. The lake-side medieval town also caters for non-skiers, with skating, water sports, a golf course and much more.

Four miles south of Zell-am-See, Kaprun sits a little higher and has its highest skiing at 3,029m. It offers guaranteed skiing on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier (365 days every year) and one of the longest vertical drops in Austria at 2,098m.

Castles, culture and composers

For a break from the slopes, take a short drive north east to the Ritzen Castle and Saalfelden Museum (Schloß Ritzen und Heimatmuseum). The museum tells the story of Saalfelden village life and culture, with traditional handicrafts, folk art, minerals and the Alps’ largest crib exhibition.

Or head further afield to the city of Salzburg, about 90 minutes north of Viehhofen. Over the ages, this cultural gem has been influenced by many great composers, singers, authors and other prominent figures.

These are reflected in the 4,000 events that the city hosts every year, ranging from Mozart Week to Salzburg Jazz Festival. In addition, there are numerous art galleries, theatres, concerts and dance performances.

Thermal springs and waterfalls

Only an hour south east, Bad Gastein sits in the midst of the Hohe Tauern National Park in the Gastein Valley, 1,000m above sea level. The town’s buildings date back to the Belle Époque and it is most famous for its thermal springs (and resulting spa and wellness amenities).

However, it also enjoys reliable snow conditions, making it an ideal ski destination. Other activities include cross-country trails, hiking paths, running and Nordic walking trails, cycling and mountain biking tours.

On the way, stop off at the impressive Taxenbach Gorge (Kitzlochklamm Taxenbach) to admire the brutal force of the Rauriser Ache river. Follow the gorge’s 16th-century footpaths and tunnels, as well as exploring a small limestone cave, with a guided tour.

Panoramic mountain views

Travel 27km south from Viehhofen to the 3,000m Kitzsteinhorn, Salzburg’s ‘highest lookout mountain’. The summit station roof-top terrace offers panoramic views across the Eastern Alps and the Hohe Tauern National Park. If you’re lucky, you may even see a majestic golden eagle.

The Großglockner mountain is another 30km south. At 3,798m, it is the highest peak in Austria and one of the highest in the Alps. Its famous ‘High Alpine Road’ (Hochalpenstraße) ascends to 2,504m, passing through alpine meadows and forests to the foot of the Kaiser Franz Josefs Höhe.

From Nordic walking to waterfalls

Drive an hour west from Viehhofen to Kitzbühel, one of many winter and outdoor sports resorts in the Greater Kitzbühel region. There’s plenty to do, including an Alpine Golf Centre, Nordic walking routes, mountain bike trails and 750km of signposted hikes within the valley.

The nearby Krimml Waterfalls (Krimmler Wasserfälle) are, at 380m, Europe’s tallest and the fifth highest in the world. Enjoy this unique natural spectacle from the safe viewpoints along the purpose-built hiking trail. Find out more about the waterfalls in the adjacent Water Wonder World (WasserWunderWelt) centre.

What people like you say about HPB

“With HPB the Ski’s the limit”

The great thing about Viehhofen is the sheer number, and variety, of ski runs – you never have to do the same run twice – and they’re all good. But then, in terms of holiday choice one could say the same of HPB.
